im so happy (nice comments plz)
this was a long process made with many iterations (some failed some approximations)
but this version is the best out of all of them and is the result of 3 years of effort :) … eventually i intend to do better animations with him (some vore some other)
i have made massive strides in my eye design
look at my more recent works
@Ponlets
@LemonDrop
WOOOOOOOOOOW You guys talk A LOT
I meant look to creatures that have very large eyes compared to their skulls. The ratio of eye size to skull size is far greater on creatures like marmosets than most other animals.
it uses Fresnel reflective properties
the material is completely reflective (if i could put photo comments like on facebook i would show you the node setup)
they are reflective but because i did not set the exposure right you cant see it
I never implied it was a 3D render, I’m just saying it should be trivial to make the eyes like that. They’re clearly not as I can just see how large the specular lobe’s falloff is, it should be much more reflective rather than some huge white object with a gentle falloff.
also if i was to redo his hair it would be done to similarly match a dogs snoot over a ponys but i wont change the hair location but maybe the length
its well crafted
i just dont have a high detail face rig … look at my profile picture .. its also made with the same rig but my current face rig has its limits and as for the hair it will require a better understanding of the systems in blender to make it better
i have a theory regarding vertex weight but it may not work
i also know that the eyes are very difficult
Marmosets are small monkeys
i dont know what makes you think of them as large when they are less than a foot tall
the example in your link is not 3d but is a painted image made in software (gimp or photoshop)
the eyes are reflective to the point that they cant be more reflective .. the issue is that the way they are built and the textures used
if i can make better eyes i would
the roughness is set to 0 and the clearcoat settings are maxed out
my renders use RayTracing and in no way utilize Gimp or Photoshop
the fact is that the angle of the sun and the true lack of actual scene objects means minimal to no reflections in the eyes
even if i modeled a scene it would not look proper
i have several new eye designs to test and this means several hours more of R&D
To give some hopefully constructive criticism, I agree about the fur being a tad long. The eyes also seem very flat. Look up some pictures of creatures with very large eyes (like marmosets). They tend to have interesting lighting traits that appear in large lens like eyes.
What truly puts this work in the uncanny valley for me, though, is the lips. The abrupt change between thick flowing hair and smooth skinned lips feels very off. Blending the hair down and then into the lips (like an irl horse) may help. The corner of the mouth also has an odd fold that seems wrong and artificial.
I’d love to see the entire model though, I think the close camera angle also throws things off. It really does seem like the model in whole is well crafted!
I was also going to add (before my edit timeout expired) that the eyes in this image show the whole environment reflection/etc quite well which is more what I’d expect from a high quality 3D render since it’s trivial to just ask the computer to do that vs actually having to draw it out painfully (Note: NSFW but I couldn’t think of another example offhand) >>1814684
I’d say ya should keep at it, stuff like the tongue in >>1679541 has a quite nice texture and all that which is not seen too often in 3D pony art from what I’ve seen, and such things are a welcoming sight. Due to the uncanny valley territory that you enter however when using more realistic materials such as fur and super detailed maws, it’s quite difficult to get looking “right” as it throws off the brain’s expectations a lot more if it’s even slightly odd looking due to how good humans are at identifying faces and all that, but with more practice it’ll get there :p
As for my own criticism I’d say the eyes specifically in this one probably need to be shinier to match the style as a real eye would reflect light in a highly specular manner due to its smooth wet coating whereas the highlight shape and all that on this makes it look more like plastic, especially in an outdoors scene like this where there should be a full IBL skybox and all that generating a reflection for the rest of the world and all the complex lighting coming from the environment. That might be what you’re going for but IMO it’d be better if it fit the more realistic style of the rest of the shading.
Additionally the way the lips are just kinda seperated in that way from the fur looks off to me, I am not sure how the proper way is since I am not an artist but it’s not that :p Some other 3D artists that use blender just kinda have it seamless which seems to work fine, like >>1843699 even though that is more cartoony styled rather than having a bunch of realistic fur simulation (though they still emulate the effect somewhat with some texturing).
Edited
I made mine like that, just messing with particles made me want to punch the computer
.no they are requests done for the one who pays
if the request is beyond my ability i will let the one who asks know about my limits then i would seek to improve on the areas that prevented me from completing the task
Edited
I really do believe commissions are just paid improvements with a theme.
thank you :) yea the eyes are literally the hardest part of this whole thing now (save for learning about drivers)
once i crack proper eyes then i will work on drivers but i have to finish the 2 animations i have qued (thankfully it should be no more than 30 hours before all of them are done)
:)
it will take some time but if my animation gets rendered in less than 12 hours than we might have a new thing out :)
i also wish people would not downvote it so hard .. we are still 10 points below zero
Now for some criticism.
I’ll just go ahead and say yeah, you do need to work on the eyes. Pony eyes tend to be difficult to get right, I know. I would say, make the pupils and iris smaller to start with. They’re enormous, they look like they’d take the whole eye socket up, which isn’t realistic at all, and tends to get to the uncanny valley because of how big they are. Try to add some dimension to them as well. The natural reflections are a step in the right direction however.
I’d also suggest making the fur a bit shorter, but that’s just me.
Still though, I think I might be interested in a commission though, its nice to see you improving like you are. :)
You’re welcome. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work, just for the skill involved.
thank you i do my best :)
YEET :3
thanks :)
no sorry i dont RP anywhere
its because of his maw :3 but thank you :)
