That “Spike is a dog” crap really shouldn’t be brushed aside but addressed directly honestly.
No way Spike would feel completely fine about it
The implication that “Spike is a pet” really just rings harshly in hindsight on the whole series.
Especially when looking at how the two friendships he fought for (Thorax and Ember) amount to basically nothing and how Triple Threat results in the literal last encounter he has with them, with their angry “breakup” with Spike being a literal end to their friendship.
Had Smolder not existed, perhaps the “learning about dragon things” could have been done with Ember instead, but no, instead Smolder goes hard OOC for those moments and “lol it’s funny when people are mean to Spike”.
And despite the groundwork being set for dealing with his brother, he’s not along for the trip to see the new hive, oh but Starlight and Trixie are.
Spike never gets to interact with Ember or Thorax outside of a “business hi” moment for the rest of the series and he’s show to have no friends at all as an adult and is just a disrespected dignitary who Twilight’s pupil outright insults freely.
He and the Royal Sisters are sure not utilized good enough honestly.
So much more could have been done there..
Spike is seriously the most abused character in the show and the one whose potential was wasted.
I think she also has something against Luna and Celestia too if she written the movie and Twilight’s Kingdom I mean.. look how the Royal Sisters were handled. Just poorly.
Her reasoning on why Spike is a dog is just bullcrap.
And said reasoning is shot due to how apparently human-world Spike is already a dog and the fact DIAMOND DOGS are freaking humans. Meaning its not the mirror’s doing but apparently the human-world labels Spike as a pet, which is seriously bad.
I’m convinced Meghan McCarthy either hates Spike or is severely creatively bankrupt. Look up the reason Spike is a dog in EQG. It speaks volumes about her.

Spike was good as moral support but he could clearly still do that if he was human.
Making him a dog was just a awful idea in the long-run like that.

Its pretty stupid since Spike deserves to be EQUALS with the girls there.
Heck.. that logic gets shot in the foot where non-ponies like Diamond DOGS get to be humans in EQG.
The Diamond Dogs is insult to injury there for Spike.
The literal dogs just get to be humans instead of DOGS.
Aye. Spike is a Dog instead of a human because “it would be funny”.
Ya know, nevermind that EVERYTHING ELSE that get sent to the EQG world turns into a human. From ponies to sirens to the freaking diamond dogs.
And yet, every other sentient non-pony creature had a HUMAN counterpart.
Well, yeah, when your job description includes “comedy relief”, you’re expected to take these things on board.

They went for Spike the Pufferfish for the same reason they went for Spike the Dog in EQG: to remind the audience that, despite being transformed, Spike is still a different species than the ponies.

well they did let the movie leak online before it was in theaters that and most of season 8 so you might be right
