Or she had no other choice in this situation.
As I said before, it’s just a musical scene. Even if you treat it literally, she wasn’t even scared of them that much.
that’s what’s crazy about it. of all people, I’d never have expected thiessen to be ignorant of the show. I like to imagine it was one of those design by committee things, where everyone who has no clue about the show is like “yeah yeah, that would be so adorable and clever, if the kitty furry saves fluttershy who’s scared of the evil bats, to show how she needs his protection!” and the few who know the show just hang their heads and sigh, “not again…”
“pinkie pie’s the wacky one, right? how about she jumps to her death and the princess has to save her from being too wacky!”
“so rarity’s the stuck-up one, who only cares about her looks. how about she pauses to do her hair in the middle of falling!”
“I never watched it, but this pony.mov is really wacky and random, right? so let’s do that!”
“twilight has to save all her friends from falling, because she’s the princess, duh. rainbow dash? which one is that again?”
“what do you mean she should try to teleport out? twilight can’t teleport, can she?”

Luna won’t like this… ;-)
you’d think if you were making a whole movie about it, you’d at least watch the show
“…To feel so desperately that you’re right, yet to fail all the same.”
Um, you do know who wrote the movie, right?
I know! that whole movie was just a train wreck of “did you seriously not even watch the show?”
you’d think if you were making a whole movie about it, you’d at least watch the show.
That’s odd too, but I think it’s meant for effect rather than to actually imply his umbrella casts light. But I think it’s fair to assume the bats are meant to be actual bats, and safe to say that Fluttershy being afraid of bats is unusual for her (particularly in light of, well, “Bats!”).
what, no comment on how the shade of his umbrella is somehow sunlight
Luna’s expression says it all.

Capper isn’t a cat in the same way Opal is. It’s the whole Goofy/Pluto thing. He’s clearly more person than beast.
Unlike, say, the bats that Fluttershy somehow needed his protection from.
@Softy
At what point does she even get to try something that qualifies as her way? By the time she decides make her own play, she’s down to pure desperation. The first time in the movie that Twilight does things in a way that can truly be considered hers is when she saves Tempest’s life, and it is Tempest, repaying this favor, who ultimately saves the day.
And the first time we see the problem is when Capper shows up. As odd as it is that the rest of the Mane 6 immediately be so taken, it’s even weirder that Twilight is just as quick to assume the worst of him. It’s not like her to be so suspicious, nor to turn away someone who offers her friendship. I’m sure she could forgive the betrayal, since she’s forgiven far worse from Sunset and Starlight, and it’s not like she won’t be able to help him out with his money problems once the Storm King was dealt with (and she would, both because she isn’t very good at saying “it’s not my problem”, and because if someone helps her, she’s the type who believes in returning the favor).
I mean, that’s just my late night/early morning take on things, but I feel like Twilight would be doing all she could to keep possible allies at this point, especially since her friends are atypically unreliable right now. In her darkest moments, she derives a great deal of her resolve from knowing she’s not alone, and can have trouble keeping it together when she has no one to fall back on.
I figure it’s simpler than that. MLP:FIM is a show for small children, so the Universe it’s set in operates on a small child’s understanding of the way the world works. Hence the Sun and Moon revolving around the Earth, weather being “manufactured”, the seasons being changed by magic rather than happening naturally, or even the question of just how long is “a thousand years ago” when all the crazy stuff in Equestria apparently happened.

Except Twilight never ever does that. She always thinks she has to solve her problems herself. I can’t recall any time she asked Celestia a favor for herself (there were one or two times she asked for her friends).
I thought Twilight in the movie was showing a lot of maturity and development in asking her princess friends to help her out in achieving something that was important to her yet fun for everyone else, while being honest, and providing good reasons. Her getting shut down like that really set the tone for the rest of the movie.
(Then there’s the whole rant I have about how this was just the first example of Twi fighting an uphill battle the whole movie, getting no useful support from her friends, and then getting blamed when she took the only option she had left to save everyone. The whole movie was “Twi asks for help, gets denied, then gets shat on when she tries it her own way.”)
Except Capper is a cat, and you know how Fluttershy is with animals.
“Teach you to just say it already instead of being duplicitous and wishy-washy, with a bonus chance to show off at the end? You betcha!”
Well, it is interesting to think about the issue why they actually have to rise the sun (and the moon). Does the MLP world don’t rotate? And if not, why is this so? I guess there are just two “logical” possibilities.
A.) the world was create by some god-like being or B.) the earth’s rotation stopped in cause of a prehistorical catastrophe (meteor, world war, magic?).
It still kinda feels like grasping at straws, but it’s something.
@Softy
Yeah, movie characterization felt a little off in a lot of places. (Anyone else find it odd how quick everypony but Twilight was swooning over Capper? You’d think at least Fluttershy would have taken a little while to feel comfortable around him, just because she’s, well, shy.)
Equestria’s cosmology is weird that way. Near as I can figure, they’re living in a Ptolemaic-type geocentric Universe, where the Sun and the Moon moving across the heavens thanks to Celestia and Luna’s magic. The “day” and “night” skies are actually something like painted backdrops; they exist independent of the Sun and Moon.
Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice that.
