Given the view outside the balcony, I believe what happened was either A: Umbra came and took over the Empire and enslaved/hypnotized Cadance and Gleaming to be her personal slaves. Or B: Upon her return Umbra was able to make some kind of deal where she can regain some power over the country while the three have some polygamous marriage.
