The comics aren’t hated so much as divisive. They’ve done stuff people liked, and they’ve also done stuff people really disliked. Sometimes the disliked stuff is universally panned, and sometimes it’s liked and disliked by different people.

In regards the canonicity, they’re in a sort of nebulous area where they’re supposed to be canon (at least so the staff insists) but the show can override them whenever it feels the need to do so, and has done so on a number of occasions.

Also, how we’re spoilering this stuff?

The pillars appeared in the comics before they did in the show so that kind of made people think they’re canon. The people working on the show and the comics and the fans basically have the rule of anything that appears in the comics is canon unless the show says otherwise.

And yes, people hate the comics. But there’s a lot of people who love them too.

Also the season 8 primer made it clear that they’re not in trouble with the Hippogriffs/Seaponies anymore. They were able to go to their kingdom just fine and Queen Novo’s niece is the student of Twilight’s school.

But aren’t the IDW comics non-canon? And besides, I thought people hated those comics.

and a seaPony can swim better and also breathe underwater without having a bubble on their head

I dunno about you, but I’m pretty sure that most ponies (especially the ones who are good UW swimmers) would find that comment a bit racist.

Sure, they can swim underwater just fine but they can’t breathe underwater (and I doubt they can swim or hold their breath as long as marine animals do).

And I’m pretty sure they’re not banished anymore given that Novo came to the celebration at the end of the movie and the fact that the tie-in comics had Twilight and Novo talk to each other just fine so it seems like they reconciled.

Oh great, they are getting turned into seaponies again. They can swim underwater just fine, Hasbro-this is not necessary! Also I haven’t seen the movie, but weren’t the Mane 6 banished from the Seapony Kingdom? Why are they being allowed back in?

@Frustration in Excelsis
I feel your pain, man: I too find it a shame that the show’s still being animated in Flash (And with the same old vector puppets to boot) rather than upgrade to a new animation medium and draw everything by hand. In fact, I made a thread asking what people’s opinion on the show’s animation was after they saw the movie, if you’re interested in checking it out.

On the one hand, the visual downgrade is a bit of a disappointment. A necessary one, because the show likely can’t afford to replicate the movie’s visuals on its budget, but a bit disappointing all the same.

On the other hand, it makes me think. If this was the first we had seen of Seaquestria, it would just have come across as a smallish cavern with some lanterns on its ceiling and some seaponies loitering around its bottom – nothing especially impressive. But we know from the movie that it “actually”, quote unquote, looks like this:

A gorgeous, delicate, shining thing of light and color, a delicate glassy city in the depths.

When you create a visual work, at least to my understanding, you start with an idea or concept of the place, character or object or whatever in mind, and the final result is not the idea itself, but the best replication of what you have in mind that you can make with the tools, time and funds you have available. Different tools, different result, different impression that comes across.

To me it’s almost, in a way, like there’s a “real” world behind the screen or the page, and what we actually see is a sort of “adaptation” of it shaped in visuals and themes and everything else by the medium it appears in.

So now I wonder: if things like this and Canterlot are a meter stick that we can use to tell the difference between something made with Flash and the show’s budget and something made with Toon Boom and the movie’s budget… what might Twilight’s castle have looked like? Or Yakyakistan? Or Griffonstone?
