It’s not the refresh rate, it’s the response time. CRT is the only (current) display technology that is at or below 1 millisecond of delay between input and display. Controllers and consoles themselves have input lag and this varies from piece to piece, same for CRT TVs even (not all technology is created equal). So let’s say you have 12ms between the controller to the GameCube, 14ms from the console to the output signal, and 1 ms from the CRT TV input to the display. That’s 27ms of lag between your hands and the character on the screen, and those are just made up I have no idea how much there actually is. That’s not a lot considering there’s 1,000ms in 1 second, but then consider this: the average LCD or LED TV has 50-60ms of response time. Add your 26 from your console and controller, and you now have 76ms minimum. When CRT TVs are faster and cheaper, why not get the better option and deal with less lag?
 
Additionally, Melee (and most console games, even modern consoles somehow) play at 30 frames per second. Another reason why LCD/LED is not preferred here is because to play 30FPS you only need 30hz screen, why have a 120hz TV to play at 1/4 of the frames? Anyway, 1 frame in game is equal to 1/30th of a second. That’s 33ms for the console to output 1 frame of the game. When you consider your input lag being upwards of 70 on non-CRTs, you’re taking up a lot of in game time due to lag, making the game feel awkward and making some tech like L-canceling that literally have 1 frame window of opportunity become nearly impossible to be consistent at. Input lag is bad in almost any game, try playing any Wii game with a Wii-mote on a cheap LED TV with the Wii set to 480p and aspect ratio 16:9, I guarantee you’ll miss easy jumps/shots/hits or have a hard time on Zelda, Brawl, even bowling lol
 
It’s just a lot better overall to play with CRTs, the refresh rate is just fast enough to play a steady 30FPS game and the response time being the lowest currently possible for a console setup. Wiis and GameCubes still use component cables, not HDMI, so we can’t make good use of 244hz 1ms response TN monitors without HDMI-component converters that add input lag. Also, emulating on PC is possible to achieve the game playing in 60FPS/hz with 1ms response time, BUT that is also more expensive, more inconsistent (emulation requires competent PCs), requires modifying the game, and is not as convenient to transport. AND FINALLY, even new technology like OLED (or even plasma) with “game mode” and 120hz and all the settings right, you still get around 20ms response time.

Pffff. Really? With the refresh rates getting upwards of 120 Hz for TVs these days? Granted, the fact that they need a specific setting to play games without input lag is… stupid.
