I would imagine there was more to Starlight’s past than the show is ever willing to tell us. THERE HAS TO BE!  
I would want to headcanon that she has had a crappy and stress filled fillyhood despite living in a well off household. Her parents must have been one of those type who would deliberately minimize their children’s contact with other kids and have them focus on their studies. Sunsburst was pretty much the only one she was allowed to interact with on occasions as he was also on his way to studying magic. And in those few occasions are what provided Starlight valuable breaks from her normally monotonous and restrictive life. Sunburst leaving had a severe effect on her.
 
It could be a little more darker…. like, Maybe she was abused?

Anyways, It’s good to have Starlight and Sunburst getting more closer and closer over time to the point they’ll confess their romantic feelings for each other, but does not have to get married.

Last time they interacted was Celestial Advice. Not including Twi’s fantasy about them, they were at the party together.
 
We don’t see them interact much because, DHX deems boy ponies as inappropriate for “girl’s story telling” with a few exceptions. Boy ponies are only ever allowed if girl ponies are either getting married to them, having babies with them or they’re related to said boy pony. Sunburst will only appear if the episode is related to Starlight because he’s her satellite character. And since Sunburst is not Starlight’s cousin, brother or father, he’s not gonna show up in 99% of Starlight’s episodes either. The only thing we can go by is he kept his promise and kept in touch with her. Developers have mentioned they visit each other off screen and write letters to each other but as long as MLP is not gender neutral, we will never see an episode focusing on their development after rekindling.
 
Sad because this ship is probably the most unique in the entire fandom because they’re not crack, they’re not background ponies standing together in a shot, they’re not related, they’re not different species, they’re part of each other’s origin story, they’re not one shot characters and the most interesting thing of all is its also one of the few straight ships in the fandom.

I don’t like this ship. Maybe if they had more screentime together it’d be more acceptable to me. In the show they haven’t interacted since Starlight reformed if I remember right.

Well, for Starlight and Sunburst, I imagine an episode doesn’t even need to be dedicated to any kind of build up for them simply because of their back story and the talents their CMs give them. They were made for each other from the ground up.
 
You can have something like a series finale montage showing what all the characters are doing with their lives. RD is in the Wonderbotls. Rarity is a successful business woman. And if it shows Starlight peacefully living with Sunburst in the Crystal Empire to further develop each other’s magic, no one’s gonna say that came out of left field.
 
They may or may not be married but its the best ending I could ever wish for Starlight. Living peacfully with Sunburst who allows her to embrace the talent her CM gives her while at the same time not turning into an alicorn or getting into trouble for using her magic.

I could also see Twilight also looking at a book for information on how to kiss…. if she ever fell in love with somepony. And no, the Flashlight ship in my opinion is peacefully resting on the ocean floor. Sorry Twi…

Lol. I imagine Sunburst would first get a book and research how to kiss but is too afraid to actually do it to Starlight. While Starlight is the complete opposite. She doesn’t know how to kiss either but would be like “fuck it” and just smashes her face into his. That’s probably why it looks like this.
