Plus another strength in their relationship actually is showcased very well in the IDW comic, specifically the Nightmare Rarity arc, Spike was the final push needed to free Rarity and purify her.

I have to say, in retrospect Sparity really does have a lot of strengths. I’m running through their times together, remembering that one scene in Rarity’s dressing room in Simple Ways when Spike breaks the fourth wall. I wish the writers would allude to their relationship more. He worships her, and she needs somepony to worship her, (which he knows-and he’s cool with that)  
You’re beginning to win me over there DR24. Lastly, I have to admit, there is a graphic series that depicts a very old Spike in his last days. He summons Celestia to perform the last special favor (this is pre-twilicorn) and that is to bring the love of his life out of stasis. Rarity and Spike had married and lived a long, loving life together and before she died Celestia put her in stasis so the two of them could die together. It’s incredibly touching. If I find it I’ll point you to it.

My point is there is no way Applejack or any of the Mane Six in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic would ever engage in a sexual relationship with Spike. It’s not much different than Trenderhoof having sex with Apple Bloom. You may well be right with respect to Spikes chronological age, however I’m referring to life experience and how he is treated and viewed by the others. He is a great little guy but he is clearly not mature enough for an intimate adult relationship. (the above panel actually supports that. I can see it as a fantasy of his, but that’s about it.)

Spike may not be as young as the show lets on considering that dragons only age due to their greed, much differently than ponies. Spike has had his fair share of moments that him a greatly mature light and even sometimes more mature that some of the mane six. Plus there’s the glaring fact that he was allowed (or in Torch’s case, outright expected) to be part of the Gauntlet of Fire despite the majority of contenders being teenagers, and yet no one complained about him being “a child” when he got the scepter.

According to the artist it would seem that dragons can experience an orgasm with one appendage while ejaculating with the other. Female dragon genital must be equally designed.  
In any event the notion that any of the Mane Six would have sex with Spike (roughly 10 years their junior), strikes me as not only laughable, but the height of improbability. That’s not taking anything away from him, in fact it further defines the nature of his character. He’d be the first to laugh at the idea. Sparity is a nice idea if Rarity is willing to wait for him to become of age.

Considering the episodes he’s gotten recently, he’s not really a butt-monkey anymore.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I think it’s abso-fuckin’-lutely hilarious that Spike is such a butt-monkey that he doesn’t even get his own brand of ‘underage’ tag; that he has to share ‘foalcon’ with all the rest of the foals is just pathetic.
