Not exactly “infinite.” It adds 128 to the amount you already had of the item in the sixth slot. You can do this as many times as you want by encountering wild MissingNo again, but if the amount of an item exceeds 255, it will loop back to zero (ie. you end up with a lesser amount). Also, most reported Hall of Fame corruptions are completely harmless to one’s save file. Only in very rare cases have unlucky players had their save file (or even cartridge) corrupted upon encountering MissingNo, but these instances are thought to be due to other malfunctions specific to that file or cartridge and cannot be reliably reproduced.

It is totally possible to catch MissingNo. It makes your sixth item slot infinite, but it will also corrupt your Hall of Fame.
