Charles James Napier specifically said, as first recounted by his brother William:
“Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.”

Like I said, up until recently (and in some parts of the world it’s still going on) a widow would be condemned to a life of vagrancy if her husband died. This is why I can’t stand caste systems by the way.

Apparently this caused some animosity between the British and the people from India. The Indians said, “Please respect it. It is our custom,” while the British said, “It’s murder!”

Interesting things you learn on a pony board. . .

I love the pose in that picture. Widow’s all like “Yeah, my man’s dead, I’m joining him–ain’t no thang.”

Not really “optional” considering they tended to force the widow to commit Sati (the name for it) by forcing her to get onto her husband’s funeral pyre or commit suicide another way. And if she managed to avoid it, she was basically treated like a Dalit (basically the self-given name for the lowest “untouchable” class in the Indian caste system).

@Wertyla
IIRC that was more of an optional socially accepted form of suicide since up until fairly recently (and it is still a problem in many parts of the world) a widow tended to be condemned to the worst of fates after her husband’s death.

Yes, was a Rammstein reference–first thing I thought of when I saw Wertyla’s comment.

Du Hast in song could mean either “You have me” or “You hate me,” which given song is apparently about wedding vows, works both ways, I guess :)
