Eh… given his displayed performance in you know, actually defending stuff, I’m inclined to believe that, given his Sister was Celestia’s personal student and his girlfriend was a princess… he got his job via nepotism

And I don’t think his married life has anything to do with this though, nor does the fact that she’s an Alicorn.

Actually, he sort of did. I mean he did come from a possibly good family of unicorns but his sister didn’t start off as an alicorn; he presumably worked his way up to captain of the guard; he met, wooed and earned his wife and her affection; he defended both Canterlot and the Crystal Kingdom with his life. He isn’t exactly a slacker, you know.
Shining is the Captain of the Guard, a prince and has a wife and sister that are alicorns. He didn’t exactly start from the bottom, now did he?
I mean, its fine to have high expectations and all but, sheesh.
