I’m pretty sure it has to do with Spike being the one who usually gets the unnecesary, empty hate.
The reason his fanbase sometimes comes off as “frustrated” is because while other characters may get criticized after one scene or an episode, Spike’s usually the one who gets shat on whenever he isn’t perfect. Either he’s extremely helpful, never makes any mistakes, figures out everything quickly, etc…or he gets extreme hate. This doesn’t happen with other characters.

Presumably the same reason Yamcha fans get rattled. XD
Dude, you know very well why it is. You know its precisely because people like you know what the situation with his character is, and yet love to add fuel to the fire. People aren’t “frustrated” because of anything related to his character, but by how a large part of the fanbase usually treats him. Its super easy to just blame the defending side and act like its totally their fault for taking it so seriously, but fact is most people take at least some aspect of the show seriously. If Spike’s fanbase looks like that is because this aspect tends to get bad treatment.

Yeah, but this pic goes “Spike eats gems -> the Crystal Gems are gems -> therefore Pearl panics, thinking Spike wants to eat them even though he likely wouldn’t” so…

What I really don’t get is why they really feel the need to make the argument at all. The Crystal Gems are warriors and Spike is a secretary. Saying his fire breath would be ineffective for no reason just comes of as unnecessary Spike hate regardless of whatever the actual intent might be.

And if they did get into a fight in this situation, Spike’s goal wouldn’t be to try to burn them; Spike’s goal would be escaping.

Silly Swashbuckler, the only thing that replaces Londo is Emperor Flounder!

The sad part is, if I were saying the Gems could beat Twilight or Rarity the responses would be less heated despite being less true a statement.

This comment section ruined my enjoyment of the joke… Mainly ruined by the guy talking about how they think Spike wouldn’t be able to take the Crystal Gems in a fight even though that’s not really relevant to the joke as it’s presented here.

Adult dragonfire is hotter than lava. There’s no evidence to say that Spike’s is the same.
Even if its not on an adult’s level yet, it has shown to be hot enough to melt metal in seconds with a very small flame. That’s still way hotter than regular fire. And are we really arguing ponies being fire-resistant?

@Background Pony #5EBF
I’m of the opinion that dragons have an ambient fire-resistant field that protects against garden-variety fire and heat, but can be disrupted by magical fire and heat, which is found in dragon fire, phoenix fire and unicorn-created fire.
Its possible that the reason dragonfire can slightly burn other dragons is because its magical in nature, but so far only they have shown the ability to do this. The Phoenixes’s fire and Twilight’s fire spell only covered the teen dragons/Spike in soot, but didn’t burn them. Many have theorized that just like Pegasi and Earth Ponies, who have a sort of inner magic reflected in their ability to manipulate clouds/the ground (but can’t actually cast spells unlike Unicorns), Dragons are the same and their inner magic is reflected in their fire doing things normal fire can’t.

@Background Pony #5EBF
That explains why the teenage dragons were afraid of the phoenixes in Dragon Quest
They were? I remember they were chasing the adults along with the chicks, and never showed any fear.

and why Twilight’s spells have singed Spike on occasion.
Twilight’s failed teleportation spell once left Spike smokey, and the fire she once conjured left him covered in soot, but none of them singed him. Both cases it was more due to the smoke they produced, but they didn’t burn him. The dragon’s fire is the only thing that ever showed an actual burning effect, slight as it was.
