Grew up since Gen 1 of Pokemon, but never have the strongest attachment to it compared to the other. I like all Pokemon gens equally. Well, as far as the ones I’ve seen anyway. I still don’t know anything about Gen 9.
Honestly G4 wouldn’t be in this situation if it weren’t for the internet. Like I couldn’t get to know the other gens because they didn’t air on TV anywhere in my country. I’d imagine the same with G4 since it wasn’t on TV until season 3 or 4.

Not sure if to put this in Stupid stuff or Unopopular opinion thread, since this is neither but anyways.
I have a theory that the reason why Twilight being a princess was seen so negatively, was because back in 2013, people I think had a general negative feeling to Disney princesses as sort of the regressive damsel in distress types, the supposed antithesis of FIM.
I remember those old terrible memes from like 2009, that showed text bubbles for each princess and talked about how “I teach girls to give up ny dreams for a man.” or stuff like that.
So perhaps for Twilight to be a princess was supposedly going back to that regressive trope.
Though I think with time where it showed Twilight as still a strong hero, and even using her newfound authority at times to help others, it became more clear this was nothing to worry about.
And I think in recent years, especially with Disney reboots playing into that problematic message, people see ones like Snow White much more positively and not some anti feminist symbol. It’s like Rarity said “Being a lady doesn’t mean you’re weak.”
That’s my theory anyways.

Yeah, I saw one episode of Tales on Tubi a while back. I thought it was pretty dumb but also very entertaining - I enjoyed it.
Pretty sure it’s still up, so I’ll go back and watch the other 12 episodes at some point. EDIT: indeed it is - it’s also on Pluto TV if anyone’s interested.
Plus, it began the streak of MLP animated media being voiced by a Vancouver-based cast, which didn’t end until G5.

That reminds me, TV Tropes says Tales aired as two shorts — as in, two episodes air back-to-back as a single unit — but also lists each episode as having a different airdate. How does that work? Were they originally aired separately, but paired together on repeats?
Back on-topic, I like the Friendship is Magic theme song. The way it starts out like the typical My Little Pony theme before ramping up into something more energetic perfectly encapsulates what the show is all about.

Speaking of which, MLP FiM was basically an anime.
Lauren Faust is known to be an anime fan herself. It’s no surprise the G4 Ponies drew inspiration from that style.
I would consider G4 Ponies in the same category as those “anime-esque” cartoons that graced the 2000s airwaves.

It pretty much is, maybe that’s why it blew up. And not only that, I know someone who’s really not into anime to the point they’re against it. And so of course they kept complaining simply because it’s all action with no exposition. Or the exposition is topsy turvy. Thankfully I believe since MYM ended, they should’ve left long ago I believe. Haven’t seen them back at all.

@Cosmas-the-Explorer
Having watched it recently, Magical Mystery Cure is just a really weird episode in general. It has some problems:
  • Twilight’s ascension just sort of comes out of nowhere.
  • Exactly what’s happening in the episode is kind of vague and confusing. It seems like they’re hoping that fans project their own meaning onto the events. It rings kind of hollow if you’re not already on board with the idea.
  • To that end, the premise sort of insists upon itself.
  • Completing Starswirl’s spell would irrevocably change the course of Twilight’s life. Celestia knew this, and gave Twilight the spell without informing her of this, which is a bit messed up when you think about it.
But it didn’t really change the course of Twilight’s life, because her life didn’t exactly have a direction.

@Mr.Myoozik
I definitely liked it more than the English intro when I first heard it.
Though nowadays while I think it’s epic I think it’s a bit too dramatic for a large part of FIM. That Italian intro makes you think it will be some epic adventure with tearjerker moments.
@TheQuietMan
To some extent, but I think compared to Teen Titans or Atla, FIM is mostly a Western cartoon probably with influences from Hanna Barbera, 90s toons like Animaniacs and of course stuff like Fosters Home and Powerpuff.
In fact much of the excitement for FIM was that it was going back to those old toons from the 90s and early 2000s that were so nostalgic to animation fans.

@Cosmas-the-Explorer
I think it was a lot of little things. One, I think, was people understanding that it was either going to significantly change the character, which meant losing the character they had become attached to, or that she would stay the same and the change was going to be completely pointless outside of selling toys. Another one was probably fear of power creep, where she’d get way more powerful: then either she’d completely overshadow her friends or they’d have to come up with contrivances to keep her friends relevant. I think a thing too, was how the show staff lied about it when it got leaked, which I think a lot of people took personally like the writers were being dismissive or disrespectful to them. Also too, I remember Lauren Faust said this, which I think a lot of people interpreted as a sign the alicornification thing meant the show was going to go completely off the rails, ie downhill, since that was right after she left. :P
That all said, while I think people took the drama too far, I do at least understand why they didn’t like it or why they were worried. Also too, it really needs to be said, the show staff were in a really bad spot when that got leaked: saying they “lied” makes it sound malicious, when really they probably were just trying to keep as much of Magical Mystery Cure a surprise as possible. This was back when a Hasbro leak was significant rather than just being a Tuesday, so they probably didn’t know how best to handle it XD
And, just if you’re curious, if you want to know how I felt about it personally, I remember being pretty neutral on the matter. I was never against it, but I also felt it was just kind of a pointless change overall :P

@DerpyFast
Yeah, it’s a mess which has some interesting ideas but mostly tries to rush you through with songs. (Which did work at the time!)
@Badumsquish
Yeah, this all sounds pretty familiar, both from back then and re-reading threads later.
(Dropping it at the end of a season also meant people had to wait even longer to see how it would actually be handled.)
