Discord didn’t want to change. How well that worked out is debatable, but it seems to be at least officially considered a sucess.

In the very least, Discord had some power they could use (and I like to think that he and Celestia have a history outside of him ruling Equestria, but that’s my shipper side talking).

Seriously, usefulness is a terrible criteria for reformation. And also, helpless kids are a lot easier to keep out of trouble than gods of chaos! (As long as you don’t start thinking of her as a helpless kid, that is…)

I do have a soft spot for “Dislestia happened before he went, y’know, full… Asshole Chaos Lord,” as a headcanon; it helps that some of my favorite fanfiction authors have used it. It’d at least make why they decided to try with him more explainable, in my opinion (he once had a loving side noticeable), aside from “he’ll eventually return again, basically guaranteed, and better unreliable ally, than active villain, if they can’t be bound forevermore.”
 
Chrysalis’ power, while notably above average at its worst, is mostly dependent on how much love she’s eaten, and regardless of if she’d get stronger by reforming, her magic isn’t irreplaceable, and neither is Tirek’s.

I don’t think she is particularly redeemable. But even I’m not sure, and I’ve seen a lot more of her real face than anyone on the side of Harmony has. Not truing makes them worse than they should be.

Feels like we have this debate every couple days.

I think it was a genuine mistake that they made us think they could be redeemable.
 
I at least would have expected a moment of genuine backstabbery if they weren’t, but they never get past the occasional jab.
 
Like the show(usually) and many viewers, i look more at how they are rather than what they did.

That’s true, but I don’t think we should keep talking about over and over again now since the show is over. I have read some fanfics related to the two-part season nine finale and they are pretty good, much better then the canon.

I wasn’t sure - I felt that ep had to be leading somewhere, but I wasn’t sure where. Of course, more fool me for thinking so, i guess…

Actually, no, it was when Chrysalis promised to maim Spike and the others being okay with it that they were truly irredeemable. To me, people demanding a forced redemption no matter how ham fisted is like redeeming Suguru Kamoshida despite him bragging about getting away with raping Shiho.

I didn’t - i knew they were irredeemable before that, but after Frenemies, i didn’t know if the show was going to try it anyway or not.
