That would actually make a really good episode. Luna trying to help Celestia in the dreamlands or whatever, and Twilight trying to get the sun raised before too much time passes and crops start dying, and she needs the help of damn near every unicorn in Equestria to do it.

She gets sick? Something tells me that Celestia may be immortal by age, but shes still not indestructible. Her power has shown its limits a few times in the show.

Do you really think unicorns have the raw united power to raise the sun anymore? We’ve seen a grand total of one unicorn with epic level powers, four with moderate power, and everyone else has no remarkable magic ability that we’ve so far seen.
 
My theory is unicorns wee just tougher back in the days when they had to regularly magically incinerate wild monsters trying to eat them.

How is that too easy? Training the unicorns to start doing that again has even more potential for an episode than sending water to Cloudsdale did.

It isn’t like there’s a shortage of unicorns, Trickquestion. Taking hundreds or even thousands of unicorns isn’t a problem. Do you really think that Celestia is more powerful than every unicorn in Equestria?
 
Raising the sun itself doesn’t seem to tax Celestia, either. While Celestia might be talented at that, she’s far from omnipotent.

what if this spell shared across a species had an affect of making unicorn power level a tad more uniform?

I don’t recall anyone anywhere attempting to measure Celestia’s power level in multiples of unicorns. Celestia and Luna are powerful enough and versatile enough that throwing a mountain of unicorns at them is highly impractical, at best, but that’s not the same as being stronger than everyone else combined.
 
Heck, going by the pilot, Nightmare Moon isn’t more powerful than six ponies working together.
 
To address your second thought, all of the unicorns actually putting effort into learning magic would institute a minimum level of competence, if nothing else. As it is, there doesn’t seem to be any required magical education.

Doesn’t Hasbro own Wizards of the Coast? I’m pretty sure they do.
 
What I’m saying is that they should release an MLP pen and paper RPG with all the characters from the show statted out so we can have a concrete answer of the Princesses power in relation to the average unicorn, then we can actually chart out how many unicorns would be required to to equal Celestia.
 
Also it would basically be a license to print money, especially if they release a lot of source books.

That be a pretty slow tabletop game though, since seemingly everyone in Equestrian sucks at combat magic.

Most ponies are just civilians, maybe even some who just talk tough but aren’t really. Just like in Real Life, average population tend to panic in the face of danger rather than take any actions themselves. They “leave it to the professionals”. But faced with REAL DANGER, we all know the cliche of background forces such as police and guards are useless. Of course the Pegasus royal guards were no match against a Mad Deity NMM, that’s obvious.

I think that the six ponies were more important, personally. Without the ponies, they were just a bunch of rocks.

Yep. But I have a feeling that licensing My Little Pony for Tabletop RPG development would be significantly more complicated than just walking down a hallway.

You expect a bunch of non-combat NPCs to pack a load of combat spells? The only racial spells seem to be mage hand and maybe a flashlight spell. The generic guards would be either warriors or adepts, so they still wouldn’t be that impressive.

I’m just saying, making a FiM RPG where large segments of the population are suddenly extremely competent at fighting and magic would be extremely unfaithful to the source material.

Movie, Video game, Novel, Comics,etc Cliche: If you’re not an important character then you fail. Simple as that.
