The crown stolen from the Crystal Empire is decorated with a jewel of immense power. Sunset Shimmer stole it as part of her plan to re-activate a space laser and bully the world into surrendering to the Sunset Empire.
 
 
King Sombra used to be Princess Luna’s student who was like Twilight in many ways, but without her extreme obedience to the Princess. Eventually his OCD went totally overboard, and he decided to impose order on what he saw as a chaotic world, starting with the Crystal Empire.

The reason Celestia turned Twilight into a alicorn was so that they can take turns ruling the day. Celestia might change herself to a standard pony with a alias on occasion and have Twilight cover the throne for her, so she(Celestia) can get a closer experience with her subjects.

I’ve always liked episode in various medias where a Royalty who is a look alike switches places with an adventurer protagonist who happened to look like him/her for one day, to experience each others’ life.  
Example:  
Princess Salvia who looks like Dawn in Pokemon.
 
Or an episode where a privileged one tries to escape his/her “boring” life for one day sort of thing.

Sombra was the son of crystal pony and an equestrian unicorn, which was not a point in his favor in his time. Dark magic use only changed his horn shape. His dark coat, fanged maw and cloven hooves are genetic anomalies.

Discord was the last, most perfect subject in the pursuit of Starswirl the Bearded’s quest for the ultimate form of life. His DNA was used to give Discord his pony features.

Like the timelords and humans in Doctor Who: Timelords look exactly like ponies but are an alien species. (Well actually ponies look like Timelords because they came first.)
 
MLP Timelords have similar body structures to ponies except they have two hearts. They also do not have diverse cutie marks. All Timelords have the same hourglass mark on their flanks (like Time Turner and Colgate).
 
Unlike Doctor Who Timelords, they were not wiped out in MLP and many reside in their home planet while others live on Earth/Equestria in secrecy. Time Turner and Colgate are two Timelords living in Ponyville.

I specified pony. Discord doesn’t seem to be a native to pony society. The male rulers that I was talking about were Sombra and the unnamed father of Princess Platinum.
 
Although technically, neither of them were Equestrians, so there’s only one known male ruler of Equestria, and he wasn’t a pony.

Just for the record, if you go by the Crystal Heart Spell book, Cadance wasn’t a ruler before being acclaimed by the Crystal Ponies, so being a princess doesn’t automatically give you a territory to manage. Looks like the title is just a title.

Crazy Headcanon I saw somewhere:
 
King Sombra is a human who came through the mirror and took pony form.

Twilight Sparkle is the mother of Celestia and Luna, sometime in her future she will somehow get trapped in the past. The Twilight Sparkle that was trapped in the past still lives to the current time in Equestria, just in hiding until it happens to the young Twilight Sparkle.

Angel has a sister who works part-time with Trixie.  
Celestia is very good at the sitar.  
Fluttershy was returned to Cloudsdale when she was little by a passing creature, who called itself an Angel. He looked like this.  
Tartarus is filled with demons who have learned how great friendship is by being incarcerated together. They still, despite this, hate Equestria.
