Yeah, the lack of an option to at least turn off the animated GIFs was a bad idea; I’ve reported plenty of unspoilered flashy GIFs in comments over the years and they always get mod-spoilered as soon as someone checks the report queue, on account of that legitimately wrecks a lot of people’s headspace.
If nothing else, the sheer volume of people who bitched unmercifully about not being able to turn it off should make it clear that there is in fact widespread support for such an option, even if the solution in its absence– i.e., “do other stuff until it’s over and catch up later”– was pretty obvious.
