Tomorrow we’ll both see if Steve Bannon will actually serve his jail sentence or duck it again and whether being President at one point mean you are forever above the law.

I can not stand politics.

So yeah, the woman who is dedicating her life to destroying the lives of trans people by convincing the public they are a threat to cisgender women and girls is out here calling a story about a 12-year old girl getting groomed and molested “romantic.” As one observer on Twitter said, “She’s 12, Joanne. What the FUCK, Joanne?”

To elaborate on that, 77 representatives got elected in the first round (meaning they got an absolute majority of the vote in their constituencies), 39 of which are RN (including Marine Le Pen herself) while 32 of them are NFP (among which LFI higher-ups Clémentine Autain, Manuel Bompard, Sophia Chikirou, Eric Coquerel, Danièle Obono and Mathilde Panot, as well as Olivier Faure for the socialists and Sandrine Rousseau for the ecologists) and only two belong to the presidential (former) majority (of the remaining four, three are right-wingers — only one of which was endorsed by Les Républicains — and the fourth a socialist dissenter).
Out of the 500 remaining contests in the runoff next week, about 300 of them will be three-way battles (or even four-way in some places), an exceptionally high number due to the turnout (candidates who get an amount of votes inferior to 12.5% of the total number of registered voters are eliminated from the runoff) which reached 65.5% — for reference, it was 47.5% two years ago.
Both the NFP and the presidential camp (after some hesitation for the latter) have given instructions to any of their candidates who came in third place to drop out of the runoff, in order to avoid splitting the vote between them and block the RN from winning (meaning that, despite leading in nearly 300 constituencies, their hopes for an absolute majority at the end of the second round might — and hopefully should — end up dashed).

To be fair, drafting in general isn’t recommended nowadays given how easily the people drafted can find out what they’d be giving their lives for. It takes Russian-level widespread propaganda combined with “Commissars” pushing draftees towards the enemy and denying them the opportunity to desert for it to be even remotely feasible, and even then it’s a disgustingly desperate way to use manpower.

Morale in the IDF is high because they’re used to one-sided massacres, that will turn around almost overnight if the genocidal maniacs in charge push for a war with Lebanon. You don’t want word to get out that draftees have a higher chance of survival if they shoot the officer in charge of wasting their lives on a desperate endeavour to keep a psychopath in power through forever war.

Speaking of drafting and the IDF, apparently its mandatory for Israeli citizens to serve in the IDF for a certain period of time once they reach a certain age

SCOTUS has decided. On an unrelated note, Biden has at least 200 days to maliciously comply.

They’ve ruled presidents are immune to prosecution for “official” acts, but not “unofficial” ones. Probably Roberts’ attempt to find a middle ground when it became clear the other judges were so far apart.

Either way, the case goes back to lower courts, ensuring no trial before November (if that was even possible in the first place).

When Uncle Clarence dies, the conservative response will be like that to Herman Cain.

What’s worse is that this was probably the least bad decision Jack Smith could get. There was no chance he was getting a favorable decision with the current court composition and I think people didn’t want to accept that.

Refusing to return state secrets after you leave office isn’t an ‘official act’. Neither is lying to the FBI or conspiring to hide evidence in an FBI investigation. So, I don’t see how it has any effect on that trial. It seems to be a slam dunk for Smith and that trial.

To be more precise, they’ve effectively made “The court has taken a decision, let them enforce it” a grim premise to what constitutes an official act VS an unofficial act.

Since there are no longer any absolutes, an act that disposes, neutralizes or silences in any way, shape or form those that would decide if an act is official or not is, by default, essentially a “Fuck your democracy, I’m in charge now” button in plain sight of the president.

Here’s the thing though: Presidents have always had this option. The primary remedy for a rogue President is impeachment, and if you drop a MOAB on a joint session of Congress so no one’s around to impeach you, you’re good to go. And current DOJ policy immunizes sitting Presidents from criminal prosecution anyway. The AG’s not gonna go after his boss.

As a practical matter, this ruling only affects former Presidents who may have done crimes while they were in office. By the time the courts are hashing out what constitutes an “official act”, you’re a private citizen with no more power than any other schmuck, unless you can convince your Secret Service detail to do some shady shit.
