I know what you’re talking about. The cult was called Heaven’s Gate and they believed that the Earth was going to be “recycled” and that they needed to survive by offing themselves from it. It was in 1997 when this happened when the Hale-Bopp comet appeared in the sky and all the members committed suicide by eating poisonous apple sauce and suffocating themselves with plastic bags cause they thought that a spaceship was behind the comet and they wanted to board it.
