Since no one’s done this yet, here’s a discussion thread where we can discuss the Mario games. You can talk about any of them here- the main platformers, the Yoshi games, the Wario games, the Donkey Kong games, the RPGs, the puzzle games, the sports games… you get the idea. You can talk about what you like about the games, and what you dislike about the games. You can even talk about the other media Mario’s been in, like the cartoons or even (gasp) the movie.

Have fun!

(pretend this next line is smaller font because I don’t know how to do that here)
Here’s hoping this won’t get next to no discussion like the Kirby thread I made…
Background Pony #BDCE
All games but Super Mario Maker there’s a thread for that.

Okay, first things first: I’m going to share with you one of my “I sucked at gaming when I was a kid” stories. This one’s about Super Mario Sunshine.

As a kid, I could NEVER get past the second Shine Sprite of Bianco Hills. Yes, really. There was this spiral area that you had to climb up, and at certain points there were thorns you had to jump over to continue. There was also one specific set of thorns that I could never, EVER jump over. Every time, I would fail the jump, hit the thorns, and fall all the way back down to the bottom of that hill, forcing me to climb all over again. Rinse and repeat.

And if that simple part was that difficult for me as a kid, I can only imagine how frustrating some of the later parts of the game would’ve been for me, and probably still would be if I played the game again today (if I could, anyway). Hoo boy, the horror stories I’ve heard about stuff like the panchinko area, Corona Mountain, and Phantamanta…

@Jarkes

…if you had made this thread when the forums first started, I could’ve talked about Mario 64 here; by now I’m sure everybody is tired of scrolling through my gushing walls of text regarding that game, and I can count the number of games I could say the same about on just one hand.

The only other positive thing I could say about anything in the Mario franchise is that SMB3 has apparently earned universal approval; too bad Nintendo decided to specialize in selling superficial rehashes.
archestereo

@Prof.NightJack

Ironically, they try harder with the hardware than they do with the games these days; sure, we’ll get the occasional Splattoon, but the Mario franchise has been especially bad about beating a dead horse.

…or do I need to explain why

Super Mario Galaxy 2

The “New” Super Mario Bros. series in general

The ever-rising mountain of wholly arbitrary and completely accessory spin-off titles

don’t add nearly enough to justify even the price of a DLC-pack (which they now sell)? 90% of the Mario games made in the past five years can be recreated in Super Mario Maker, which for that matter pails in comparison to, say, Little Big Planet!
Jades

@Jarkes

I’m pretty certain the panchinko level is a untested beta level because nothing works as intended there.

I’ve never heard anything bad about Phantamanta though.

@archestereo

I’m not even sure why the NSMB series exist anymore. It’s so stagnant it’s ridiculous.

They still change things up to where it’s really not “superficial rehashes” like you say.
One can build on the old and still make a good game, hell they change things up more then CoD does for most of it’s games.
Hell changing thing too much is actually a problem with the Sonic games, they Mario games ARE Mario games as they keep the core gameplay.

>The ever-rising mountain of wholly arbitrary and completely accessory spin-off titles
Oh yes, the spin-off, even the one that are not a rehashes because they do not have the same gameplay, ya they are rehashes.

@Jades
I’ve said this a number of time, some do not care for the collect-a-thon style that forces you to replay levels over and over, so that is not understand why people like it to play them as it’s back to the old style of going from level to level.
I’ve always said the only thing I really hated about SM64, SMSS, and so one was they force you out after ever star/shine that it;s stupid, I liked Banjo-Kazooie so much more as you could do a lot in a world before you had to leave.
archestereo

@Prof.NightJack

“They still change things up to where it’s really not “superficial rehashes” like you say.”

You could claim the same thing about 80-90% of the platformers from the 80s and 90s.

“One can build on the old and still make a good game”

When did I say you can’t? That’d describe most of my favs; my point is that many of Mario’s recent games don’t even do that much.

“hell they change things up more then CoD does for most of it’s games.”

…even if that were true, that’s a pretty damn low standard anyways…

“Hell changing thing too much is actually a problem with the Sonic games, they Mario games ARE Mario games as they keep the core gameplay.”

Oh what, so all of Sonic’s games should play like the Genesis games? It’s not like every game is from a different genre; the vast majority of them are still fast-paced action games where you play a hedgehog that can spindash through robots and must get from point A to point B. Seriously, what more is there to the core gameplay than that?

“Oh yes, the spin-off, even the one that are not a rehashes because they do not have the same gameplay, ya they are rehashes.”

…maybe not a rehash of the main games, but Mario Party 65, Mario Kart 500, Mario Tennis 2017, Paper Mario and Luigi: The Thousand Year Saga and Super Smash Bros.: The Only Legitimate Alternative to the Hyper Street Fighter 9001 Turbo: DLC Edition aren’t exactly original either.

Well when you problem with a game series is they are keeping stuff the same you kind of have no real ground to stand on dude.
And when I see people clam that Nintendo doing that is somehow a bad thing I just have to laugh because even if they doesn’t to too good, unlike the other companies, it doesn’t really hurt them that much, so clearly it;s not as problem as it’s why they can keep going.

And no, the Sonic game do not have to like the Genesis games, but they don’t need to be so radically different from one game to the next.
You say the that about 80-90% the same is a bad thing, well it’s a lot better then only having about 5% the same from one game to the next, like a number of newer Sonic games have.

“It’s the same, that’s bad”, It’s the same because it’s the same series, DUH.

Quit complaining about Mario. Since it’s core is it’s Gameplay. And they won’t change it too much. Unless it’s Paper Mario. Heck out of all the Paper Mario Games the Thousand Year Door is the best.

Oh and I’m saying this as a fan of the Sonic games but not really a fan of the main Mario games.
So if I’m pointing out how Sonic is the one with a problem and not Mario, it means that Nintendo is doing somthing right.
archestereo

“You say the that about 80-90% the same is a bad thing, well it’s a lot better then only having about 5% the same from one game to the next, like a number of newer Sonic games have.”

A. I said 80-90% of platformers, with an s, as in multiple games were trying too hard to ride on Mario’s coattails, not that one game is 80-90% similar to another game.

B. How is that inherently better?

C. Have you even played Sonic Generations?

D. I’m not paying for 10-20% of a game I don’t already own.

E. Stop putting words in my mouth.

“it means that Nintendo is doing somthing right.”

…that or they’re pandering to a bunch of sheep.

“Quit complaining about Mario. Since it’s core is it’s Gameplay. And they won’t change it too much.”

Which is why they end up monotonous, hollow and boring.

Sorry but when you go the the “sheep” line you just lost all reason to be taken seriously.
I have never seen anyone use it that can be talked to reasonably, they seem to think there own thoughts on a subject are so correct thet shut out any other ideas.

And yes, I have played Sonic Generations, I own it, and it’s a good game as it’s a goo balance of old and new, what the Mario games get right all the time.

“Which is why they end up monotonous, hollow and boring.’
To you maybe, but clearly not to others, can’t please everyone, that’s how some series go to shit, they try to hard to please everyone, others go to shit by not changes at all, but with Nintendo keeping Mario going so long that found the right balance to keep the right number of people happy and keep the games fun.

…that or they aren’t so easily conned outta their money; and you don’t exactly sound so open-minded yourself, Mr. “what the Mario games get right all the time”. I mean, really? You’re starting to sound like you work at IGN or something.

And this is why someone that calls people “sheep” don’t come off as someone to be taken seriously.
Oh ya, it’s not like people can have that as an honest opinion.
No, they are sheep or they are working for something like IGN…
archestereo

@Prof.NightJack

I never said your opinion wasn’t honest, I’m just trying to say that it’s a common pitfall to not look any further than a big name; nobody has any reason to buy the shirt off their own back, but people get Tom Sawyered all the time.

That and brand recognition. There was a time where you could just slap Mario’s name onto anything and it would sell.

Don’t really have much else to contribute to this thread. I haven’t played a new Mario game since Galaxy 2, and I have no interest in buying a new Nintendo console ever again…
archestereo

@Prof.NightJack

Damn it, I told you to stop putting words in my mouth! When did I say that Mario games can’t be enjoyable?

SMB3 is enjoyable.

SMW is enjoyable.

NSMB is enjoyable.

…until you realize you wasted your time and money on a game you technically owned already.

Then you really start kicking yourself if you broaden your horizon and realize there are other platformers out there that make the “core gameplay” of Mario look like an alpha build from Steam’s Early Access. No, seriously, pretty much every platformer ever has Mario’s “core gameplay” (even if they fuck it up); why should a bland Mario game impress anybody when there are meatier, more flavorful games like:

  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Mega Man
  • S3&K
  • Ristar
  • Klanoa

    …just to name a few.

    Notice how the first game I listed was a Kirby game; the games in the Kirby franchise change just as radically as the games in the Sonic franchise do, but there are far less people ragging on the Kirby games. Hell, it radically changed the gameplay in the second fucking game! If Hal’s laboratories can pull this shit off, then the Mario franchise has no fucking excuse.

I’ve pretty much just accepted that the Mario series will never change beyond “Rescue the Princess from the Dragon Turtle” and that people seem to like it that way. Just live and let live and move on…

I’m not putting words in your mouth, you are stating everything like it’‘s wrong for the Mario games to not be changing a lot and still be good and enjoyable, I’m justb pointing out that clearly you have missed the mark as it does change things to the point people do not see it as “superficial rehashes” or “monotonous, hollow and boring”, but every time I point that out you have to comment with things like how the people buying them are being sheep.
You are coming off like you really do not understand that people do like them for how they are, and that they can have an honest opionin like that.

“the games in the Kirby franchise change just as radically as the games in the Sonic franchise do” Actully you are wrong there, the Kirby games keep the core the same, true it changes more then Mario but less then the newer Sonic games, they’s why people don’t have a problem with them, it’s not as a radical change as the Sonic games.
archestereo

@Prof.NightJack

…how the FUCK do games like Canvas Curse and Epic Yarn incorporate Kirby’s core?

And quite frankly, no, I can’t understand it; it’s like watching a senile man watch the same movie a hundred times a day. And pay the nurse each time. To play the copy he already owned before he was admitted to the nursing home.

I’m not even making a jab regarding nostalgia, I’d be saying the same thing if it were Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Notice I’m not in this discussion.

I’m just sitting here watching him. Not all play Super Mario Maker which itself is a different game than all Mario games. But it still retains what we all like from Mario Games. It’s gameplay.

It’s core gameplay hasn’t changed that much over the years.
