Everything that is suggestive and higher have better scores than tottaly safe art. 1 of mine go 450 only because it’s explicit. It’s just a decent drawing.
Your poni is cute and has socks. Insta upvote :)

My second highest scoring image here got 148 upvotes.

Did well, so I drew another, which didn’t do anywhere near as well, although I am thinking of doing another with those three.

Not always. You can even throw in a high-scored marvellous pic without being noticed before. These are the very rare moments where you are actually judged by your talents and skills and not by how many follower you have on tumblr.

exactly. Its rare. an anomaly. I don’t think getting your highest upvote artwork and using your formula is a good indication of ability. Even then, how do you know the motivation of all those votes? They could be voting because its their favourite pony, or the subject might align with preconcieved biases. It’s human nature.

The question is “How would you rate your ability out of 10”. Not “How much acclaim do you have on Derpibooru”.

I’d say a test of art skill is to look at the stuff the artist draws. Is it always in a similar position? If it is, then they probably can only draw in that pose.
Any backgrounds?
Again, this may mean the artist lacks skill in that field.
And on humanized, hands. Hands are a PAIN to draw right. Less skilled artists may pick a pose that hides them.

Yes its really complicated. There are so many variables…

Anatomy, Composition, Perspective, Lighting, Concept, Brushwork/ Mark Making, Style, Likeness… Those are just some broad areas. Some of these categories might not even be relevant to a particular work. Some people might not even consider one of these categories to be noteworthy enough compared to others. It’s pretty difficult to quantify ability in a number with all these variables.

Yeah, my highest voted thing has a score of like 430 but tbh its one my more shoddy peices anatomy and shading wise. Though the composition is allright I guess. Something that’s trash on a technical level probably won’t get many up votes, but I’d say a lot of more volatile and immeasurable variables play just as much if not a greater role.
