I rarely see Smudge’s OC and it doesn’t stand out in my mind.

I thought he was a mare too. It’s the face. Look at Dash and Applejack’s faces in the fourth panel, and Bee Broom’s in the sixth, and there’s no denying he has a mare’s facial structure.
