It’s actually banned anywhere in Europe, although its sale is more or less tolerated by the authorities as it’s a cheese with a very long tradition.
Anyway, I have no recall of anyone intoxicated by casu marzu’s consumption, so I assume that, despite its horrid look, it’s quite safe to eat.

The place I read about that cheese said it happens, so I’d feel justified in erring on the side of caution

There is a similar cheese from Normandy, the Camembert.
Gosh, I do like me some brie on occasion, but just something about the look of it make me pull a face like Twilight up there.
