I want them to explore dragons more in the show, but definetly not in the way the comic has gone aboiut it.
And Im not even talking about the terrible way the message was delivered.
Im talking about the whole “dragons living in Pony society” thing. It is a MASSIVE contradiction to several episodes, and completely destroys the lore more than some people seem to remember.

(And, to be fair you did ask for thoughts in your first comment, so I’m not sure why you’re objecting when people are sharing them).

Yeah, I’ve seen those posts too. They don’t negate or invalidate that the comic got direction for what to do with dragons based on what might be explored in the show, Bobby Curnow said they did, and Jim Miller simply said he didn’t know anything about a dragon town in Phillydelphia, that doesn’t mean that season 5 or other future episodes in the cartoon wil not necessarily explore dragons more and some of the ideas in the comic will line up with what they will do, it just means there won’t be a Fillydelphia dragon town (it could mean the show will touch on dragons growing differently depending on circumstances, “nice” non-wild dragons existing or whatever). The writer never claimed he had a say in (show I assume you mean, obviously he does comics since he’s writing them) canon, I never said that he said that, and I’m certainly not here trying to argue with you, assuming that you’re angry or treating you as such or telling you how to feel about anything, so no need to get defensive. I was just trying to offer a possible explanation for the alleged inconsistencies based on the writer’s Twitter posts, if you don’t want to like it or talk about it then don’t, nobody’s forcing you.

They did not in fact get direction from the show. I know this, because this fandom bugs the ever living hell out of the staff:

As much as the writer of the comic may want to, he has no say in what is canon and what is not, so I am going to take all of that with a grain of salt. Frankly I am beyond tired of discussing this comic.
It was only mildly frustrating when people mistook my concerns for whining, it started to get moderately irritating when I got treated like I was angry simply because I stated a negative opinion. At this point I’m beyond done with whole thing. It’s just a comic, no need for people to keep bringing it up.
I didn’t like it, I don’t have to like it, moving on…

I don’t know if it was any or entirely the author’s doing, I heard that they had to rewrite the issue a lot (perhaps completely) based on the feedback they got which apparently was all or mostly concerning the handling of dragons. Which would really heavily imply that the show’s planning on doing something with it that they want to mesh, but I guess we’ll see.

I get what you’re both saying, but it doesn’t bother me, because to me it’s not saying that dragons aren’t good if they’re not like ponies necessarily, but that dragons are “good” if they decide never to give in to greed and selfishness. Which should be true for anyone or anything but I guess with that species apparently, if you make selfish choices the entire world’s going to know about it because it will literally change everything about you. I’m sure dragons can still be majestic if they’re “good” dragons that have grown naturally and I guess don’t get quite as big, I’ll agree I don’t like the anthropomorphizing of them all in the comic like the one with the snuggy and the guy with the shirt and muttonchops but that could just be Agnes Garbowska’s art style which is pretty kiddy looking in general.

I’m not saying I loved the issue but it’s just a comic so if it doesn’t turn out it reflects the show it’s easily dismissible. If it does then I’ll wait and see how the show handles it and tries to reconcile it before passing judgment.

That’s what was so disapointing though. The author was so adamant in delivering this very specific social commentary that he had to tweak and stretch and change so much stuff, and in the end it really made the overall product suffer. The other part was the very nasty implications that arose from the dragons having to be “different” (ie: civilized and like ponies) to be, for lack of a better word, “good”.

If they had just stuck with the concept that “not all dragons are evil” and rolled with that, it would have been an amazing story with a more subtle and much more effective message.
Like, here. I’ll pitch a story right now. Pick up where QueenCold left off, have Spike now in the company of this compassionate adult dragon. Now his pony family is freaking out; they think he’s been kidnapped or worse. They go after him, operating on the assumption that dragons are evil, and try to rescue him. The dragons think that they’re being attacked and fight back. Spike throws himself in the middle and explains what happened. The ponies learn a valuable lesson that there are in fact good dragons, the dragons learn a valuable lesson that ponies aren’t all “namby pamby wimps” and can be brave enough to challenge dragons to rescue one of their loved ones. Spike comes to the realization that, although he’s a dragon, what matters is who loves and took care of him, and he bids farewell to his dragon friends and goes home with his loved ones. There. Action, heartwarming, valuable lesson; now get someone (unlike me lol) who can actually write and that could be an epic story.

Tl;dr: Oh God I hope that doesn’t become a thing in the show. I want big epic majestic yet kindhearted dragons!

According to the comic writer on Twitter the reason the dragons in the town are so different (not as big) is because they’ve grown naturally and not from greed. Since they supposedly got a lot of direction from the show about what to do with the dragons that may turn out to be a thing in the cartoon too.

Oh my God that would be beautiful.

Lemme tell you, I hate that they had to change the dragons so much for that comic because if they had done the kind of thing you were talking about that’d be an awesome story.

Possibly, the request was to make an image of a greentext.

I am currently thinking about drawing a scenario I’ve had in my head for about three years now. It first came to me after I read the synopsis for Dragon Quest, but the episode hadn’t aired yet. Basically what happens, is that Spike goes to the migration, but doesn’t find answers to any of his questions. It’s night time and he’s exhausted from wandering aimlessly and lonely between all the big dragons. He happens upon a cave, lies down and starts to cry, but he isn’t alone. There are other dragons in the cave who are trying to sleep and they are annoyed by his sobbing. Then a female starts comforting him and sings a lullaby. The dragons around them are still irked by the noise, but as the song progresses, their expressions soften and gradually they start to sing along.

“Spike and Luna are both here in front of a few dragons”
That’s a pretty poor justification for a spoiler, much less a published comic.

I think we saw the same greentext on /mlp/ though; what other possible scenes did you think of drawing?

I debated myself whether or not I should have added the spoiler tag, because, yes, Spike and Luna are both here in front of a few dragons, but it doesn’t reveal anything about the actual comic.
Thoughts?
