“Yeah but the other 2 manage to surpass their mentors”

Only because those 2 had this long Razzle-dazzle reincarnation/bloodline mumbo/demon to help them out. It’s completely unfair to give Sakura shit for that

“So did another Ninja during their fight against Kaguya so this is vague”

She helped Obito track down Sasuke after he got tossed around in dimension, & punched God in the back of the head so that she wouldn’t escape in order for the other 2 to seal her

“What else did she do other tha n break a Genjutsu”

Fought a giant enemy crab, Helped save Hanabi,& Made sure her knuckleheads teammate got together with the girl that loved him. & her adventures in the Sakura Hiden novel.

Sakura isn’t useless. Underutilized is a better word for her given that the plot centered solely around Naruto & Sasuke’s plight with at least one arc dedicated to someone else. It still doesn’t change that she had her own significant development from a rabid fangirl to a competent & strong Medical Ninja (competent & strong by normal standards anyway with all the uber bloodlines & demon stuff that surrounds) & a caring person to her teammates & family.

While true regarding women not being handled well in the manga it’s still a common issue that applies to all shonen manga series. Naruto just happened to do it a smidge better by given some their own arcs & not resorting to fanservice with all of them.

Fought & Protected her teammates & Rock Lee from The 3 Sound stooges until help arrived”

The “3 Sound stooges” treated her as a joke, and even the injured Lee did more to defend himself than Sakura managed. She managed to sorta jump Zaku, but was essentially dead as soon as he got loose. Also, “Until help arrived”… Ino and her team was hiding in the bushes for most of the fight even before that, and they were the help.

The only thing she really did was motivate Ino to help her out.

“-Was able to Fight back the Yamanaka clan mind switch technique.”

Because at the time she had an unexplained “gag” second mind. This was stupid even in the plot. It was also useless because she didn’t even win doing it, she just tied(so both she and Ino lost).

“-Attempted to Fight Gaara who was nearing completion of his Tailed Beast form during the Konoha Crush”

The emphasis is on attempted. Not doing anything useful.

“-Became The 5th Hokage’s & one of the 3 legendary Leaf ninja’s pupils.”

Funny how she was the only one of the pupils to never get better than her teacher during the manga, while Sasuke and Naruto surpassed them by a couple million miles.

“-Fought a Akatsuki member & lived to tell the tale while also helping save Gaara & Kankuro”

Chiyo fought that fight. Sakura was a useful tool for Chiyo in the battle at best.

“-Bond with Naruto & Sasuke helped new team member Sai from Danzo’s brainwashing.”

Arguably correct.

“-Saved Hinata’s life during Pain’s assault on Konoha.
-Healed & Rejuvenated the entire Shinobi Allied forces during the fight against the Ten Tails.
-Desperately tried to save Naruto’s life once the Nine Tails was extracted from his body.”

This I’ll give you, Sakura served one purpose well in the Manga
the Healbot.

‘2-Helped Save the World from Kaguya”

Yeah, just like how random Ninja #132 did. This is the most vague and pointless description of an accomplishment I’ve seen.

“-Helped save the world again from colliding with the moon (The Last)”

Post-Manga, and how much did she really do? Dispel a genjutsu that Naruto should really have been able to break himself(i.e. a forced plot point to let her look good at expense of the story)?

“Yeah you right Sakura was useless wasn’t she?”

Considering her standard plot was “Mope around and do nothing” for most of her screentime, yeah, mostly.

All the female characters in Naruto were badly handled and kinda a joke compared to their male counterparts.

“the blonde one next to sunset and the black haired one are tertiary characters and are thus completely unimportant and don’t do anything. the one where Rainbow Dash would be is an antagonist for an arc really early on but eventually becomes a good guy and falls into tertiary status.”

Not really true, is it? Ino(Blonde) was a pretty major supporting character for most of Part 1, and had quite a bit of showtime in Part 2. She was actually portrayed as very competent and got to have some good moments.

Tenten(Blackhaired one): Sadly mostly true- of all the female characters that had any supposed plot importance, she was the most underdeveloped- likely due to the fact that she was made as a complete afterthought- the author already had Lee and Neji’s dynamic figured out, but due to the way he set up the team system he needed a third member(who would have been relatively unimportant no matter the gender, though). This is however mostly an issue with the manga, not the anime, as the relative lack of any depth for her in the manga let the anime team do some good stuff with her in the fillers(I know people tend to hate fillers, but it’s not like the Naruto fillers are really any worse than a lot of the actual canon stuff).

Also, while the manga kinda lost it’s footing in the last arcs, the treatment of Tenten was actually pretty good- she kicked some ass and got to be the strong character that acted as a pillar of support for her allies when they broke down.

“The pink haired one on the bed is one of the three main characters and is a useless twat until the second show. she does some stabbing, but not any of the other girls there.”

Sakura(pink haired one) was handled worse than both Tenten and Ino. Also, she was arguably even worse in the second show(being useless still despite now having abilities that should keep her from being so). She served mostly as a healbot.

“the one petting spike is a secondary character who gets killed during the second show for the express purpose of ratcheting up the drama for that scene and that scene only because she doesn’t stay dead.”

She’s also a kinda sorta love interest, but not really because the writer can’t write those to save his life. Otherwise agree.

I mostly agree they were badly done, but it’s pretty standard fare for Shonen.

As a fan of Bleach, I wouldn’t say that about Rukia, but yeah Orihime has done a lot of nothing ever since the kidnapping. Even her supposed power-ups after the timeskip had no effect in the long run.

Basically yeah, shonen is still very male-oriented. Females either get less powerful, can’t catch up with the others, or get a lot less to do as the series goes on. It’s really annoying and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon unless somebody shakes things up.

@Maya
Yeah, let’s just say Naruto isn’t exactly gender-equal… if you’re a woman in the Naruto-verse, expect to do jack shit.

Can’t that be said about most shonen manga’s though? I mean JoJo had tons of female characters & (with the exception of Part 6 & Lucy in SBR) did jack, DBZ rendered Bulma useless during The Namek saga & probably beyond, One Piece had Nami put in a coma for the majority of 2 arcs (Choppers introduction arc & the Thriller Bark arc), Orehime & Rukia are basically reduced to a Princess Peach roles in Bleach & everyone’s too OP anyway so the girls don’t even get defining moments. Basically this is a common problem we just have to get use to in these types of manga.

Ino’s family runs a flower shop, Sakura punches things and heals, and the only thing I really know about canon Hinata is that she’s got a massive crush on Naruto and is cripplingly shy.

The pink haired one on the bed is one of the three main characters and is a useless twat until the second show. she does some stabbing, but not any of the other girls there. Not even the Antagonist for an arc one because at that point her entire character was “useless bitch.”

None of these characters do any stabbing really. Because ANIME.
