Spike’s at about the right altitude, and he’s got a magic shiv. Big guy might be having flashbacks of his narrow escape from Veterinarithrax Emasculative, Neuterer of Nations.

Hmm, wacky thought: spicing up the Mario-rescues-Peach mechanism by alternating levels from the rescuer & kidnappee’s perspectives, where one’s infiltrating the Fortress of Despair(R) whilst the other’s pulling a jailbreak. Each time one character loses a life, switch to the other. Combine that with checkpoints ala Super Mario World 1, and you could switch to two-player or player+computer action if they make it far enough to meet up halfway.
