He truly thought tirek was his friend and this made him realize the pain he caused fluttershy. Discord is like a child he has to learn the hard way because he has gone through his very very long life doing what he wants, this made him truly understand the pain he caused and wanna change. While he still has his faults and mishaps from this point forward even by eos.

The difference between discord post and pre s4 is that post s4 actually does want to be good but has a hard time being so which is why he genuinely apologizes when he realizes what he did wrong in his episodes and learns a lesson coming back at least slightly nicer than before and with that in mind and in this scene in particular with the voice acting here it actually manages to make him sympathetic despite it also being karma, its what u call a https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Laconic/JerkassWoobie

The brilliant acting by John de Lancie had me in tears at the end, I actually felt sympathetic towards Discord after…

I think the writers deciding to teach Discord a lesson may have been the right thing to do but it was still pretty damn cruel.
 
I wonder, did they do that so they can develop him into a more reformed character…or perhaps to make him into a much darker villain?

yeah, that, plus he’s on all fours, which in itself is pretty damn rare for him. (even though they ruined my headcanon about discord going on all fours more as he started to relate more to ponies grumble grumble bitch bitch)

I’ve never seen Discord fold his ears back like that before. It’s really cool that, for all the human-like shenanigans his body normally does, that they give him pony facial body language for strong emotions. Half the time he barely looks like he’s part pony because he does such weird human-like things with his face and it’s drawn so much longer and thinner than the ponies are, so he looks more like a goat; I think this is the first piece of body language I’ve seen off him that makes him look like the equus in his species name isn’t a misnomer.

After checking the screenshots at MLP wiki, he most certainly is.

You know between this and some of Celestia’s most “brilliant” decisions, its really starting to look like having a thousand years worth of experience does nothing on this show.

The animation in Discords face as he says it is really good. These gifs make me notice stuff like that that I’d miss during the show.
