Spike is at a maturity level consistent with an age where orientation is already apparent. We’ve seen that he’s already far beyond the “girls have cooties” period.
 
As the other BP said, Spike’s crush on Rarity is too big a part of his personality and characterization, like we saw in this week’s episode, for this to be believeable. Add in the crapsack version of Equestria and this story got my downvote.
 
Ponystar may have had the best of intentions but he/she didn’t choose the right character or environment to get her message across.

That’s possible, and for most of the foals in the cast I’d keep that in mind, but to me Spike just feels too sincere in the love he’s displayed to be doing it to hide same-sex attraction.
 
Besides, I’d like to think Equestria is far more progressive in terms of sexuality. Would they really belittle LGBT ponies like we do to our own kind? As such I don’t think anypony would have to hide any queer feelings they have when growing up.

Consider the fact that he is still a kid. He may develop and come to realize that maybe he was gay all along and was subconsciously crushing on Rarity to hide that. Or more easily believable, he’s bisexual.

Eh. It’s cover art for a short little fanfic. The author does spend time in the story justifying and explaining the Rarity-crush aspect, so I can roll with it. The author’s notes say she wrote it just as a show of support for some gay friends of hers and what they’ve gone through, and I can roll with that too.

I’d be okay with this in most any other case, but given how Spike has always had the hots for Rarity, I can’t see any non-straight ships working for him.

And yet another author throws Spike’s canon characterization in the garbage for some quick drama.
