I imagine that for many years, Twilight actually did view Spike as a brother, but has in recent years shifted her view (just in time for this to happen).

That’s perfectly fine. I just think that the fandom doesn’t need to jump to that label when pass canon has never pointed to that–does a son serve a mother breakfast or bath her? Not at that age at least.
 
Dash isn’t Scootaloo’s mom even through Dash serves as her guardian; Twilight doesn’t see Cadance as a mother even as Cadance took care of her as a filly; Granny Smith isn’t AJ or Applebloom’s parent despite Pear Butter being gone.
 
Twilight doesn’t have to be a mom to feel the way she did. But you’re right, this is still just my view.

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree; I think this episode pretty clearly established that Twilight thinks of herself as Spike’s mom. An older sister would’ve become angry at Spike’s retort, because she’d think he was being disrespectful of their parents. Twilight didn’t become angry; she just broke down and cried. That’s the reaction of a mother.

Spike and Twilight more or less grew up together. Even when Twilight had isolated herself with no friends Spike was there for her. Twilight’s reaction is understandable since Spike and her were always together.

Same here! I was suprised and delighted by it.

I love that they didn’t keep it ambiguous. She clearly views herself as his mother, and was devastated by this sentence. I really appreciated all the emotion they depicted.

How could you, Spike :-( She hatched you, fed you, raised you, taught you everything.
