I believe that they use some subconscious magic ability to redirect energy away from their bodies, explosions give off heat and kinetic energy, the ponies just reroute the energy away from their bodies and into the surrounding air or ground, but too much energy could overpower their subconscious magic field, leaving the frail body of the pony unprotected.
