Yeah, i really fucking liked it too. It’s good genre stuff. It’s a standard animated movie plot (like, really standard) but the gorgeous animation, the music, the designs and the pacing make it more than worthwhile.
Of course, this is assuming the viewer already finds the characters and setting to be endearing, which i assume most people here do.

Opinion time:

The movie was darker than I was expecting. Good emotional bits and they didn’t make the characters Mary Sue-ish. A bit cheesy here and there, but it’s cheese that has been done before in the series. Some of the humor falls flat (I’m looking at you, Grubber) but most of it is funny and amusing. Gorgeous visuals and cool action scenes.

I watched it early because I had no way to see it in theaters and I didn’t want to be spoiled. Watching it in theaters would be amazing and I’m sad I wasn’t able to do so.
Watch it in theaters if you can!

Overall, I’d rate it 8.5/10.

I think at a certain point, one has to accept that movie logic will rarely coincide with real-world logic. Small plot holes and necessary logic leaps rarely ruin a movie as long as the story has a sensible progression otherwise.

Yup. No such thing as a new idea, but if you can execute it well, then it doesn’t matter if you’ve seen this before.

I don’t know, if a film has a good sense of charm, critics are pretty kind to it. Goosebumps (2015) and Captain Underpants got good reviews and they’re not the most deep or original kinds of films.

Eeeh. 7/10, imo. It was perfectly 0kay. Not great, but the good outweighs the bad. Even if you can spend all day picking apart the plot holes and fridge logic.

Eh, I’m not as critical as some, but I’d hope I can enjoy it on both levels.

I get it though, it’s not meant to be like, super deep and adult. That it has characters you can relate to and the requisite emotional heft is more important than every single thing being ‘correct’.

I guess what gives these 4chan reactions some weight is that they’re from a forum that is in the deep end in terms of overanalyzing things. If they can get past it, maybe there’s hope for us.

If you are watching it with an open mind and a childlike attitude and forget you’re an adult, the movie is great. But people who are adults love to over analyze the movie so much, they forget it was made for kids. Of course it will seem predictable, shit, lazy. But for a child’s mind, they don’t see that yet. From a child’s perspective they add more character, more feel and more things to look up to in it, you know.

Don’t watch it with your brain, watch it with your heart!

I’m starting to feel more confident that this film will surprise critically in a positive way. So many small little rumblings seem to be pointing towards a good result.

And I feel like the fact that this film uses more traditional animation is working in its favour. If this was a CG film I don’t think we’d be seeing this undercurrent of genuine enthusiasm. People miss this sort of thing, and that nostalgia (and some genuine quality in the filmmaking) could be breaking through some cynicism.

I could also be dead wrong so let’s see.

The movie was great, though the dialogue was shot on twos (12fps instead of the movie’s 24fps) which makes it look sloppy and as a PC gamer THIS FUCKING TRIGGERS ME

the sound design was great though

I especially liked the Pearl Alarm

I’m assuming he doesn’t mean this year’s crop of animated movies, which brought us such coughs and barfs wonders as talking emojis.

I mean, if we didn’t have a Pixar film closing out the year (and it’s current Pixar we’re talking about, so its quality is more of a toss up than it would usually be), it’s actually somewhat likely based on early reaction that this may be one of the best animated efforts of the year.

But eh, who knows.
