Rarity’s cutie mark was gotten for decorating dresses with the gems she found, not for her ability to locate them. And Rarity’s ability is specialized to one specific thing just like most other unicorns. These three have expertise in magic in general sense.

Are you sure the pony they are talking about is Rarity? Rarity’s cutie mark isn’t a fashion-related one, is gem location, which is a magical special talent. I think Lyra’s is more odd for a unicorn.

That’s right! Rarity is successful and is making more money than Starlight–who probably has been living on welfare…  
Holy shit I just realized that. Starlight’s origin village wasn’t particularly wealthy, her ‘our town’ was not making any profit and now she’s crashing in Twi’s castle for free!

She shares the castle with her friends remember and I don’t know outside of living in a castle, it’s ever been established that Twilight is particularly wealthy even as a princess.
