What the Fluff?
@Vinyl Fluff
That might be why she’s less desaturated than most other ponies (except for Pinkie, which is presumably because Pinkie) but even as a satyr she’s colorized.

At that point she’d just drank Anon’s magical rainbow juice, which is powerful enough to instantly Alicorn a pony when straight from the tap, and magically transformed. So I’d say she’s got plenty of magic buzzing around her body to give her color.

The character doesn’t have to have magical abilities to show up in color. Just the presence of magic alone is enough. Some inanimate objects in the comic also show up in full color, see the crystals in the caves which are said to be magical.

Especially pointless argument considering she’s an earth pony. And as evidenced by the season 5 finale AND the way the comic works with color and magic, if she didn’t have any magic anymore she would lose her cutie mark and no longer be drawn with color in the strip.

I don’t recall a lack of magic making them lose their cutie marks. When Tirek stole everyone’s magic, it desaturated their colors and their eyes turned greyish, but they kept their cutie marks, IIRC. I might have to rewatch the episode. Are you thinking about when Starlight stole their cutie marks, which had a similar depowering effect?

But regarding Mascara, I’m pretty sure Pencils addressed this somewhere by mentioning the potions she constantly experiments with (and drinks), some of which are magical themselves, and this is why she’s got color in the comic. I recall a discussion about her having color when she first appeared.

As someone who considers themselves a scientist your response viscerally upsets me.
I don’t wish to continue this conversation any further, but I hope you have a nice day regardless. Cheers

Wait, what?

Traditional unicorns derive magic from their horn. If they, for whatever reason, lose this horn they lose their ability to use magic.

Twice, once in the show proper while she was a pony, and in EQG she has lost her horn, and been unable to use magic.

This implies that the show’s staff follows traditional unicorn mythology in this regard.

It’s not until the end of EQG when they tapped into the magic in her crown (you know, one of the Elements of Harmony) and they were transformed did she gain any semblance of magic. And it’s being directly provided by her crown.

If you considered yourself a “scientist”, you should know this is empirical evidence. What you’re doing is head-canoning things and are upset when someone disagrees with you, and gives you evidence to the contrary.

What the Fluff?
no horn = no magic.
Links contain spoilers for EQG 1, fair warning for anyone who still cares about that sort of stuff.
Twilight tried to use her Unicorn/Alicorn magic when she wasn’t a Unicorn/Alicorn and it failed, that in no way shape or form implies that she had no magic. It’s entirley possible that her magic was changed into a diffrent form of magic that she couldn’t use, or even that she kept the magic inside her but couldn’t use it because she lacked the proper equipment to do so at the time.
no horn =/= no magic
no horn/humainized form = no active Unicorn/Alicorn magic
Not saying you’re wrong, simply that there’s no evidence to back up your claim. Even in the scene where Twilight realizes she can’t use her magic she doesn’t say it’s gone, but that it isn’t working.

You understand that functionally speaking, it makes no difference whether or not she has it and she can’t use it, or doesn’t have it at all, right? That was my point. She can’t use it in the movie, Spike points out “You don’t exactly have your horn.” Cue Twilight freakout.

In traditional mythology, the horn is what gives the unicorn their magical powers. If it’s removed they’re no longer able to use it. It appears they went with that for that scene, and to explain why Twilight couldn’t use her magic.

Also, it’s not the first time she lost her horn. Discord removed hers and Rarity’s in The Return of Harmony so they couldn’t trivialize his trap. Same end result. She couldn’t cast magic. And this is in a magical world (unlike EQG) and she was still a pony. If she had some other form of magic that’s the most-likely place for her to have shown it. I think that shows pretty conclusively that the horn is required to cast magic.

And in EQG, even if she had “another form of magic”, it was still the same end result. No horn, no capability to cast magic.

Whether or not she had magic “in another form” doesn’t matter. She had no horn, she had no way to use her magic. Same end result.

Aw dang, no wonder she was desperate enough to chug that flask :<

That and she said she suffered constant pain and had to take medicine to make the worst of it stop.

Maybe the extra brain space is meant for the control of magic, conscious or not? Humans lack that brain space, causing the magic to build up because they can’t release it.
Which means Mascara is weaker right now. Healed from dizziness but, lousy in the magical ability department.

It depends on whether or not Pencils follows EQG canon, but she might not have any magic at all right now. As we saw with Twilight, no horn = no magic.

I wonder if her pony form has a bigger brain than her satyr form. Higher intel and thought process with regards to brain to body ratio. Considering how FAST she can talk previously. XD

Hopefully Anon’s ‘medication’ will enable her to keep a few sandwiches down.
