Description

So I was rewatching the Season 5 finale and noticed something very interesting. Now in one of the timelines, Nightmare Moon had succeeded in taking over after her return. It was most certainly roughly about a year that she had been in control (as the Season 4 Premier took place 1 year after the first episode). The interesting thing comes with Nightmare Moon’s guards. We know for certain that Rainbow Dash was one of them, but it also appears that 2 others (of the 6 we saw) were mares. Given their size compared to the others and how mares are all shorter than stallions, this is the most likely answer to this phenomena. But why bring this up? Because it’s the first time we’ve ever seen any mare guards ever in the show. All of the Royal Guards we have seen have been stallions. Every last one. And these guards we see are most certainly Celestia’s as they do not wear the armor of Luna’s guards (also Nightmare Moon’s). But what does this mean? That Nightmare Moon is an equal opportunity employer. Be you mare or stallion, you can join the guard and defend Equestria. But Celestia only employs stallions. Quite a curious thing for her to do don’t you think? It does make you wonder really if Nightmare Moon’s rule was really as bad as everyone likes to think.

Nightmare Moon is an irrational revolutionary he’s only goal is to subvert every tradition on which civilization was built, for better and especially for worse.
Of course she has more female guards.

Maybe Nightmare Moon has mares in the Royal Guard because so much of the population was dead by that point they couldn’t afford to turn anyone away.

I wonder what her reaction would be when she finds out that she’s one of the ponies who defeats Nightmare Moon in the prime timeline.

Now here is the other question: How did Nightmare Moon convince Rainbow Dash to serve her?

Probably Nightmare Moon ran some sort of smear campaign to convince everyone that Celestia was actually evil, e.g. “Destiny was on my side. I won because I deserved to win,” and managed to convince enough ponies to follow her that way. Perhaps her opposers were weeded out not by her, but by her loyal supporters.

@redweasel
And that’s the key problem with my presumption. Rainbow Dash and Rarity are loyal to her, and their loyalty seems to be sincere. The question that comes from this is “Why?”

In the canon universe, they wouldn’t have done so, but they also seem like less pleasant ponies in this world. In general, I’m curious about how the different personalities came about for all of the universes. So many variables slowly brought these stories together.

I also kinda figured she’d impose a draft, but more because she’d have to force ponies to follow her, at first, though I’m sure that she managed to get others to follow her, somehow… Were I to guess, based upon the fact that none of them were starving despite the moon being a poor light source, I would further make the assumption that either what food does grow is largely directed to Nightmare Moon and those on her staff, or that all food is imported, with the rations being unevenly distributed. She would want ponies to praise her, so I could actually picture Nightmare Moon being enough of a tyrant to not care about those who don’t praise her, and especially those who praise her sister. In general, I’d say that many guards were likely– shall we say ‘displaced?’– in favor of those who would follow her orders.

I think Nightmare Moon imposed an equal opportunity draft, because she’s insecure and wants to convince herself that everyone is equally capable.

There’s two explanations:
  1. guards become guards because they get a cutie mark for it and the vast majority of stallions end up with this as their special talent
  2. Celestia, being a super-powerful alicorn needs almost nothing in the way of guards so she hires eye candy stallions to fill the ranks

“oh my celestia this is worse than total war and industrialism wrecking the ecosystem or changelings murdering all of my friends as they lay waste to the countryside!”

“…so, you’re not here for the tour?”

Perhaps Celestia just realized that stallions (like human men) can build up a lot more muscle mass than mares; mares however, generally have more endurance than stallions, so she put them on Spec. Ops. Perhaps NMM had so few loyal, she had to suplement her forces.

Yeah, the fact that the Nightmare Moon AU had ponies other than Moonie herself involved really sabotaged that particular sequence in the show for me. As for the “equal opportunity employer” stuff, y’all have fun arguing over that; I’ll be over here debating how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Yeah but that’s half the fun wouldn’t you agree? I mean they don’t give us much in the shows so we’re left to fill the blanks with what ever we wish really. And only the books give us anything solid that fills in some of these blanks such as the bat ponies and why they serve Luna. So again, beyond that we’re all kinda free to fill the blanks with our own headcanons and so over analyzing is half the fun because it does help us make sense of things that, well, don’t really make sense.
