Eyup i have been there and done that and let me tell you demon powers gives you the most awful sunburns and for a week after the powers are gone it still hurts like HELL! just a tip Sunset buy a LOT of baby lotion trust me you will need it.

From what I’ve pieced together, when the Elements of Harmony are taken to an alternate reality, they are no longer bound strictly to their chosen wielders. However, they become dangerously unstable, which would explain why Sunset Shimmer’s transformation looked so painful.
 
Speaking of their instability, like Itsthinking and StandInTheShade said, she was probably being rejected, while at the same time, having her body twisted into a form befitting of the evil inside her.

Not only that, but I think the reason she was crying was that it was showing her WHY she wasn’t worthy. Everything she did, she was forced to watch and feel what she made others feel.

Yeah, hurts doesn’t it? I like to think that the Elements, when worn by someone other than who was destined to, violently reject their new wearer.
