Twilight: drunk as the white is moon!
Edited
Sorry to ruin your fun man. It just bothers me that Starlight hasn’t been allowed to feel anything her own way, except for making a rocky friendship with Trixie. It’s like she can’t set one hoof out of place or it’s the apocalypse. So it’s not just ruining her own life, but everybody’s, meaning she has to conform in every way whether she wants to or not, because basically the whole world is being held hostage.
We live in the society that created Hot Topic so that all the self-proclaimed “nonconformists” could make sure to all be “different” in the exact same way. If this show endorses conformity, it might just be the result of it coming from a conformist society.
Well, no. I was just wondering if the show was really so pushing for conformity when it also had a villain show how bad that could be, you know?
@Background Pony #E977
Am I wrong for occasionally just wanting some fucking entertainment?
Isn’t that pretty much what Starlight Glimmer tried to do back when she was a villain?
Yes, because being harassed by a disturbingly cheerful pink motormouth on a permanent sugar rush until you give in and join the herd is so much more reasonable and we totally need those days back.
The real problem I have with the last two seasons is the implicit moral “You must accept our ideology or you’ll do something terrible like destroying the world!”
…Yay gender equality?
@Scrounge
…And it turns out it was right the first time before I “fixed” it.
Fixed. Still not funny, but at least it makes sense now.
Twilight: “Maybe I wouldn’t if someone had a better grasp of subtext, hint, hint!”
Damn it, Diamond! You did that on purpose, didn’t you?
Then she grew to become a lesbian
She’s generally just using basic telekinesis rather than the flashy stuff Twilight and such use.
But her work often requires excruciating precision in this, to say nothing of the sheer number of objects she’s been shown magically holding and manipulating at once. Yes, it remains a basic talent, but at a very advanced level. It’s kind of like how a human who can run or swim or play chess is nothing special, but a human who can run like Usain Bolt or swim like Michael Phelps or play chess like Garry Kasparov is a whole different thing.
You’re the first person besides myself who noted that Rarity is actually pretty powerful in her own right.
The reason why many don’t think so, I believe, stems from the fact that A) she’s usually surrounded by absurdly powerful casters, B) she’s a physical fighter, and C)she doesn’t get into as many fights as, say, Rainbow or Applejack, so she doesn’t show off her skills that often. At least not in the context of a direct battle.
Actually, she literally did about two or three times as much as before, since she had to teleport over and grab Spike, then teleport them both to the map.
@Somber Star
Given how Twilight and Zecora talked about cutie marks when Apple Bloom asked if they could give her one, I’m not sure what Starlight did would have even been considered theoretically possible.
@Trahzo
I dunno, did you at some point ask her to trot up to you today and say “Hey you, don’t forget about Minty”?
Trixie is okay, but her fanciest spell was a miniscule lightning bolt that did nothing. My point was that the gap between Trixie and unicorn Twilight is massive, and FAR bigger than a possible gap between unicorn Twilight and Starlight.
The problem is, unicorn Twilight has never been shown not able to do those things. Until that is shown or stated, there are a multitude of reasons why she never did, such as lack of motivation. Twilight never tried to modify Starswirl’s spell in season 2, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t if she put in the amount of time Starlight did. Unicorn Twilight showed absolutely no strain from levitating herself and five other ponies into the air simultaneously, so saying she couldn’t do the same as Starlight did (which was a lot slower than alicorn Twilight’s flying) is unfounded speculation.
Right, she could do that because she explicitly spent years studying magic that the main characters haven’t. Einstein might not know as much about Epidemiology as Alexander Fleming, but that doesn’t mean he’s less smart than he is, it means that he had a different focus in his studies.
Twilight never showed how hard the stasis spell would have ben before her ascension, so speculating on that is useless, and she didn’t “take on” Nightmare Moon. Twilight did literally the exact same thing as last time, a teleport fakeout.
If you notice when they battled, Twilight was using more shields and teleportation than Starlight was, and had already been through two bad futures expending her magic, and her stamina still lasted just as long as Starlight’s. That points to Twilight having more magic than Starlight, not vice versa (even if Starlight has better actual combat skills since she seems to have better aim and is better at conserving magic).
I agree. In fact, it’s a point I’ve made several times in other threads.
It seemed to me she took more pleasure in the re-affirmation of her ideology and her control than in the suffering the process took. See, a vital component of sadism is, ironically, empathy. You have to actually be aware of others’ suffering to take pleasure in it. I really don’t think Starlight has it. All she could see was what she wanted and whether or not she was getting it.
If you take aside her disposition, compared to what we’ve seen of the average unicorn, Trixie is actually fairly powerful and resourceful (considering she survived becoming a social pariah). I think what keeps that from being apparent is that she’s being compared to actually significantly powerful unicorns like Twilight, Rarity, Sunset, and Starlight. When put on that list, she’s on the bottom by a wide margin. But I’d hazard that you don’t make a living doing magic shows in a world filled with magic ponies if you’re not bringing something exceptional to the table, regardless of how you try to spin it.
Starlight is at least as powerful as alicorn Twilight. Also, like unicorn Twilight, Starlight has not only finished but vastly improved upon one of Starswirl’s ancient spells. She can levitate apparently indefinitely, while also fighting and maintaining enough maneuverability to dodge Twilight’s attacks.
Additionally, Starlight started the season controlling magic that nopony else can begin to understand. Most ponies only have a vague idea of how Cutie Marks work, but Starlight has proven able to remove, store, and even transport them.
Except that now she can freeze over two dozen ponies at once as opposed to six, and she can take on Nightmare Moon alone.
Um, no? Trixie was a blowhard, a trickster, compared to Twilight who was a magical prodigy. If Starlight is more powerful than unicorn Twilight was, it was not by much, and transforming into an alicorn didn’t give Twilight much of a boost in terms of magic, as far as can be seen.
Twilight self-levitated several times as a unicorn, instantly learned and cast Starswirl’s time travel spell back in season 2, and learned spells like dark magic just by watching once. Absolutely nothing Starlight did (magically) this episode would have been out of unicorn Twilight’s reach.
Her weakness isn’t in magic, it’s in dealing with her own emotions. She couldn’t move on from this one seeming rejection in her childhood. She let this grief dominate her life and used it as an excuse to torment others as an outlet. Twilight called it ridiculous to her face.
Starlight wasn’t just smug about torturing Twilight’s friends. Look at how she made Party Favor suffer. She took pleasure in it, especially when he was grovelling at her hooves.
