I really do think Trixie was the only truly good Rival/Foil to twilight. She and Twilight had personalities that clashed so wonderfully, and had good chemistry. On the other hand, Starlight and sunset were both pretty generic in a “just copy twilight and be done with it!” manner, and honestly don’t feel like they worked well as Twilight’s foils.

And I will also agree that I think that Trixie would have made a much, MUCH better addition to the group as a seventh member than Starlight. The comics show ways that Trixie can actually work well with the mane six, learning from EACH of them, and contributing some good chemistry back (being an egotistical character who is full of themselves, but earnestly still wants to learn about friendship, filling a role in the group of the arrogant buttmonkey, ala blackmage or Lance.)

The one character Trixie has never interacted extensively with in the comics? Twilight.
 
Honestly I think there’s too much friction there. Trixie is Rainbow Dash turned up to eleven, and they already wind each other up. Or Discord, who Twilight still despises.
 
Trixie as Twilight’s apprentice wouldn’t have lasted a week.

Well yeah, they’re great whenever they interact. But as an apprentice? Twilight isn’t anywhere near as willing to put up with that crap as Starlight is.
 
I really love the relationships there to be honest. The conflict between Twilight - Starlight - Trixie is great, how Starlight’s stuck in the middle of these two who despise one another. I find it hilarious.

You shouldn’t treat Trixie and Twilight like they’re real people. Friction in fiction is what makes things happen in a story. If you can create a storyboard for a 10 minute episode with two characters just being stuck in an elevator together, you know those two have good chemistry. Its as simple as that.

That’s because Starlight was a better chioce to be Twilight’ pupil. She doesn’t want to improve her magic to continue challenging Twilight. Starlight only prefers shortcuts to finish her lessons and spend her free time with new friends. I don’t know if consider official Starlight is the seventh member, cause she is so disperse to remane5.

Oh, as I said, they’re great together. But they really need the degree of separation Starlight gives them to keep that animosity under some sort of control.

I wish they would give the humans ANY form of identity at all. They’re humans with horse-like names, all vegetarians, and living in a world that seems to utterly worship horses.

I have not seen them eat piece of meat since EQG started. Then again that may just be the animators being lazy, after all they couldn’t be bothered to make an acual burger and just used the hay burger model from the show.
