I might as well bring up my Next Gen a bit now since I’m done with the tagging. Since you and Eqq were talking about Limestone, I may as well do the same.
For my Next Gen, I paired her up with Prince Rutherford. Being a friend of Pinkie Pie, Pinkie invited him to Limestone’s birthday party. Since Pinkie has a lot of friends, she may have invited a little too many creatures at the party which accidentally caused some of her family to be a bit overwhelmed, including the birthday gal.
Rutherford notices that Limestone was just really pissed and he has a talk with her. Then he teaches her a good traditional Yak way to vent. …By smashing the plate he was eating from of course. So Limestone smashes some plates and breaks other stuff until she feels better. Limestone asks how he’s friends with Pinkie anyways and he explains that Pinkie is an honorary Yak and talks about how much she helped him in his time of need. He then tells Limestone that she has the spirit and strength of a Yak as a compliment. So the two do hit things off that night.
They currently have one offspring in my Next Gen, an adopted Diamond Dog daughter by the name of Quicksand.

I want to do stuff with the Shadow 5 for my Next Gen stuff too but like Eqq, I have no idea what to do with them.
Originally I wanted to pair Lightning Dust with Indigo Zap. But after the Wash Out episode came out, I want to pair Lightning Dust with one of her fellow Wash Outs (I’m leaning towards the idea of pairing her with Rolling Thunder but having Short Fuse be a sperm donor to Lightning Dust).
So now that I have that new idea, Indigo Zap is with nobody again.

The dull family color scheme is probably going to be a bit hard to shake off with them since only one member in their family isn’t that dull color. I’m honestly trying not to do that with my Pinkie Pie family OCs. Or at the very least have a nice blend of dull colors and brighter ones. Maud’s probably going to be the hardest because the other character I’m pairing her up with is also not too colorful.

To answer your question, you guessed right. Maud moves back home on the Rock Farm with her husband (Cheese Sandwich) to stay with Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz. Also at some point, Gummy got too big to stay at Sugar Cube Corner, so he lives on the Rock Farm as well.
As for the other Pie sisters, Pinkie lives with her wife (Princess Skystar) at Sugarcube Corner while Marble lives with her Husband (Big Mac) at Sweet Apple Acres.

Off single parents that’s a tough question
full disclosure: my ng revolves more around the ‘parents’ bcs I care about the canon chars more then my Ocs so most of the content is based around happiness for them and thus everyone gets shipped//shot
It’s one of my biggest troubles, I suck at making mixed families ahhhh
tldr:
There might be more but spontaneously I can think of Vapor Trail and Celestia (Quarterback and Songbird are WIP XD) :V
I’m thinking about shadow 5 headcanons rn and re-discovering them as faves again, we love turning underdeveloped characters into Ocs XD
Also the washouts are a good topic, I want to use them soooo baddd but I’m not sold on ships for em yet ~
I actually had Indigo Zap as a possible partner for Double diamond but went a different way soo now I’m also back to square one XD
Do you have specific Hcs for the shadow 5s pony breeds :V ? aside Indigo obv

I think when it comes to dull colors it depends very much on balancing saturation and brightness, a lot of people end with dull colors even with colorful parents just bcs they mix the colors too simply (ending with lots of nasty browns n grays fuff)
Andd Maudwich is good content !! It was a fave of mine for a long timebcs shipping PinkieMaud is forbidden but I love their dynamic oops don’t @ me
They have super cute potential for autumn colored offspring !
I love being asked questions about my NG so when I’m curious about smn elses I ask questions right away huee
Gummy having to split from Pinkie is so heartbreaking gosh TTcTT But I see ur reasoning for it

That’s perfectly alright. I like what you did with the pairings and it’s a nice twist to see the canon characters get more focus with a Next Gen since a lot of them are very OC focused.
I’m trying to find the perfect balance of giving both the parents and the children focus myself. It’s not easy but it’s a fun challenge.
Speaking of balance, I do want to find the right balance of cute happy moments and sadness/drama. I don’t want to risk things being boring by having everything be perfect (conflict is often necessary to tell a story). But at the same time, I don’t want to risk going too far on the opposite end by making things too sad for people to enjoy and by making everyone a complete unlikable jerk or anything like that. I feel quite a lot of Next Gens fall way too heavy on one or the other.
I’m the type of person who likes darkness, drama, adventure, jerk characters, and a good feels trip but I’m also the type of person who also likes comedy, happiness, nice characters, and overall wholesomeness too. So it might be best to have a variety of that sort of stuff to prevent making things too stale and one dimensional. Hurt/Comfort Fics and the Earn Your Happy Ending trope appeal to me for this very reason. Life can often get hard but ultimately it’s nice to have love, empathy, and optimism save the day in the end.
I honestly don’t have many single parents but I wanted to depict a few of them myself since it’s nice to show different types of families. At the moment, I only have four single parents, each single for their own reasons. I’ll get to them later in another post.
I love taking background and other minor characters and making pseudo-OCs out of them. I’ve done that before a lot for other fandoms as well. It’s fun.
I didn’t have any specific headcanons for them really. But for now, I do have some general ideas of what I want them to be. Icey had the idea of making Indigo Zap a Bat Pony and Sour Sweet as a Changeling (with a Unicorn disguise) and I loved those ideas so much that I feel like possibly incorporating those ideas for mine as well.
As for the other three, I do have my own ideas for them that are different from his picks. I picked unicorn for Sugar Coat. Classical unicorns are usually depicted as delicate, feminine, and elegant creatures and since Sugar Coat likes ballet dancing, it seemed like a good fit. Her unofficial cutie mark is a stick of lit dynamite (which kind of reminds me of Tempest Shadow) and she kind of reminds me of a bit a nerdy type of character (I think it’s mostly the glasses but the scene with her at the lab helped with that too) so those are other reasons why I chose unicorn for her.
Many fans usually depict Lemon Zest as an Earth Pony (due to her being Pinkie Pie’s mirror in the special and her name) or as a Unicorn (because her headphones and love of music probably makes lots of fans think of Vinyl Scratch). But I like the idea of making her a Pegasus. Mostly due to her chipper personality and because I can easily picture her flying around with those headphones on.
As for Sunny Flare, hers was a bit harder pick at first. Her name and unofficial cutie mark have a sun theme going on and that’s usually something associated with unicorns. But her cooler color scheme and the fact that the unofficial cutie mark is weather themed, she seems like a perfect pick for a pegasus to me. So I’m ultimately picking a pegasus for her.
Unfortunately, that means I have no Earth Ponies for my Shadow 5. But since I had the idea of them dressing up as the Shadow Bolts, it makes sense that most of them would be fliers. As for Sugar Coat, she can maybe use magic to help herself fly (either by making magic wings or by levitating).
That sounds about right. It’s sometimes easy to get really bleh colors when mixing the parents two colors together. Though sometimes you can get surprising results from doing that so it’s fun to experiment with that too. My rule is if mixing the colors looks bad, then don’t use it but if it looks appealing, then try it.
I don’t like incest ships but I can’t blame you for loving Pinkie and Maud’s dynamic. Their personalities bounce off each other very well in the show and I feel a lot of Pinkie’s best moments in the show were in episodes where she interacts with Maud.
I was actually going to go for the popular CheesePie ship but then I saw the movie and fell in love with shipping Pinkie with the birb.

I got the idea from Egophiliac. She’s one of my favorite artists in the fandom. She was one of the first fanartists I was exposed to and her art is one of the reasons why I joined here (some of her art can only be seen here and not on her Tumblr or DeviantArt).
The comic was so cute and touching that I decided to do something similar for my Next Gen but with some differences here and there. Another difference I had in mind was the idea of them finding out that Gummy is actually a Cragadile which was inspired by this picture (and its comments). Not to mention it just felt rather fitting given the family’s rock theme.
Good question. I actually had the plan of shipping her with Party Favor.

I understand wanting to keep a balance between light-hearted and serious monents for your next-gen.
I feel like IMO, a lot of next-gens (or at least a lot of the more well known ones) seem to take it too far into the “serious” direction, and it ends up with a lot of characters acting like a bunch of assholes (either the next-gens or the canon characters), and the stories themselves being dark and depressing and just seeming like it’s drama just for the sake of it.
I don’t have a problem with drama being added, but it feels like a lot of those people over do it.
A lot of the lesser known artists have cute, light-hearted next-gens, I enjoy those ones more.

The thing about my NG is that I was thinking about it for so long but never gotten too far and knowing myself I was sure I’d never finish it to a point were I could release a ‘‘story’’ so I just started posting stuff ask-blog style because that way I at least get something out hah
So I have less of a plan on what kind of content I’m putting out to have a solid narrative ? sooo most my NG is just blatant shipping and self-indulgence XD

Babby def are foster moms who support abused kids and have their own gaggle of rapscallions to call family.
Basically the Manehattan branch of the CMC is an glorified orphanage XD

I got the idea from Egophiliac (…) Another difference I had in mind was the idea of them finding out that Gummy is actually a Cragadile (…)fitting given the family’s rock theme.
