This is apparently the first published instance of “alicorn” being used to refer to a winged unicorn, but there’s a trace of evidence that the term originated in the mid-’70s, albeit spelled “alacorn”. Go to groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/alt.fan.furry/vWsm9aN_aao and do a search on “alacorn” to find a posting on the topic from June 1993.
Personally, I wish it were spelled “alacorn”, but whatcha gonna do?
Alicorn originally referred to a unicorn’s horn, or the material it is made of. That usage is as old as alchemy.
Using ‘alicorn’ to refer to a winged unicorn is very new; as far as I know, Piers Anthony invented that meaning of the word, and the above passage is the first recorded usage.
@Deserter
There’s a few people there that did agree that alicorn is the proper term and even cited this book as proof that bronies didn’t invent the term.
Of course I can’t post this there since they have limits on how much you can post everyday…
