It depends on the context in which you use the word “Depressant”. When most people, usually doctors, refer to alcohol as a depressant, they are usually speaking in a medical sense, not an emotional one. Medically, it refers to a drug or compound agent that reduces neurotransmission levels, reducing stimulation or arousal and diminishing functional activity, typically to the brain. Most sedatives and recreational drugs are depressants since they decrease awareness.
 
I am not 100% certain about this so if anyone else cares to, please correct me.
