I think this was the first fic which went with this kind of how to handle the “RD lose wing and copes with it”-issue: A complicated growing back magic spell for which Twis expertise and power is needed as well as lots of patience from RD.  
And much much much time spend alone btween those two. <3

The last panel is just plain stupid. If it had said the princess CAN’T do it I would have had no issues. It could just be something like Celestia just has a lot of raw power, but Twilight has more variety and grasp of the intricate subtleties or whatever BS way you want to phrase it.
 
As is it just seems contrived to make Twilight the heroine.
