I think both have perks with their designs, though I think I kinda prefer the new Tirek, sense his look fits with the current show’s Lauren Faust art-style, and I kinda like how he looks less human, and a bit more bull-faced.
 
I will admit the old Tirek looked quite badass though, and had a cooler voice.

I prefer the design of old Tirac. New Tirek just always looked comically big to me. I also like it that old Tirac looks like he is wearing armor, while new Tirek’s looks more like a shirt.

There’s a reason why I prefer to spell the G1 version Tirac and the FiM version Tirek.
 
Yeah, I always thought the G1 character was called Tirac, but since his appearance in FiM everybody keeps on calling him Tirek. I’ll do that from now on, distinguish the old Tirac from the new Tirek.
 
…I’d love to have seen the new Tirek using the Rainbow of Darkness on Equestria. I wonder if the ponies might someday find the Rainbow of Light and evidence of pony society from G1 days? :)

The plot thickens...
Despite wanting Tirek to return to the series long before it actually happened, I actually am quite pleased with his new redesign, and I kinda prefer the “bull face, ring-nose, black-eyed” look as opposed to the more human-like old face.
 
One thing I prefer about G1 Tirek is the voice, which was quite badass.
 
I wouldn’t mind seeing more previous-gen villains/characters return, and get redesigns. (TMNT does it all the time now. They even brought back “Muckman & Joe eyeball.”)

Even side by side, old Tirek looks more dangerous than new Tirek. Old Tirek looks like he was a GI Joe villain, new Tirek just looks like a common weightlifter.
