If you want to get super technical about what the comics did first, the comics had the Shadowbolts as a rival sports team in the EQG-verse way before Rainbow Rocks was even a thing, let alone Friendship Games.

Also the Cook and Price ponies which are, in the most literal sense, original characters from the comics that have now been made canon in the show.

@CronoM
The comics were also the first to come up with the concept of hiding one’s cutiemark with makeup. Twice even, and way before season 5 was written.

I’ll have to check when the Babs Seed issue hinting at her talent was published, it’s possible they had season 5 scripts at some point.

My thoughts exactly. And the day the show is ready to address who those ponies were, is the day they address the time dilation Sunset canonically has with the other Mane 6, as we know she was roughly sophomore age when Twilight was not yet Celestia’s student.

Word of God has nothing to do with it. The Moondancer in Amending Fences is unquestionably the canon one because she is right there in the show. The G1 Moondancer has not been canon since FiM started (seeing how FiM is the kind of reboot that tosses everything from previous incarnations).

The comic “Moondancer” is canonically a different pony. In fact, all of Sunset Shimmer’s classmates are canonically NOT the ones Twilight studied with. Neither are the “Minuette”, “Lyra” and “Twinkleshine” in Twilight’s Cutie Mark Chronicles flashback.

So we can all agree by word of god (Writers of the show) that the TV Moon Dancer is canon unless stated otherwise by the writers?

“Annual 2013” was made and released before season 4 even aired. Even the show was inconsistent with its background characters before season 5. It fits with the state of the show at the time of release, and only implies that this pony is Moondancer due to the G1 reference.

The comic is written around the show’s continuity. It’s made to follow what happens the show, but the show isn’t beholden to what happens in the comics. That issue was probably written and published long before anyone working on the show knew they were bringing Moondancer back.
