It’s a bit schizophrenic, really. Or as if they had a real nasty fight, divided the house, drew a no-crossing line, and moved all their possessions to the respective half.
 
I know this house design is a one-off joke in an episode aimed at fans, but it’s a little more bizarre than everything else in the episode IMO.

Well, they’re supposed to be close. Proabably a quick train ride away.
 
Twilight even flies from Canterlot to Ponyville quickly in the S4 opener, though it might be faster through air.

It seems the knob to their door is on Vinyl’s side of the house. I’m sure that won’t create conflict… Unless Octavia actually enters and exits the house through her windows on a daily basis. Far trade considering how much space she’s got compared to Vinyl. Imagine how they built and decorated this house. We need fanfics on that!

I like to imagine that given the design, the house was Octavia’s originally, it’s just that Vinyl’s ‘crashing over at her place’ turned into ‘okay I actually don’t have a home, PLEASE let me live here.’
