And people complain about Shining Armor being “boring”.
And now, that one-dimensional portrayal of him is so set in stone that even if he were to get an episode to himself, it probably wouldn’t make much difference. The poor guy would still be just as static as ever.
Simple. The writers decided it would be funny if they kept Big Mac as a one or two word joke character. Aside from those, he’s basically a mute.
It’s funny when you think about it, but Trouble Shoes actually has more character development than Big Mac. What’s up with that?
It doesn’t help that he has so little character development that Starlight Glimmer and Trouble Shoes got FIMFiction tags before him. Heck, we’ll probably see Tree Hugger and Zipporwhill next.
Also, I blame DT’s problems on Bipolar Disorder.
>Filthy Rich did manage to raise Diamond Tiara, so he’s not completely beyond reproach.
Her attitude problems are not inherited, from what we’ve seen. It’s always tempting to blame everything a child does on their parents, but that’s a myopic approach.
>self obsessed
He simply doesn’t like his first name, which is not even remotely the same as being “self-obsessed”.
In FAD, it was obvious that he was perfectly fine with putting his foot down with his daughter, and that he was generally easy to get along with. This comic makes him look like an appeasing sap with DT, and a bit of a gasbag in business. Dumb.
Being rather naive and blinkered when it comes to his daughter, a little pompous and easily angered by hippies trying to screw over his profits aren’t capital crimes, and don’t contradict anything from his appearance on the show.
Popularity and friendship is two completely different things.
Twilight Time doesn’t show DT as popular in as a friend, but in as someone not to cross and/or to mooch off from, so everyone stays friendly with her to avoid incurring her wrath (which the CMC have already).
She’s like the rich popular girl in school that may seem to have a huge circle of friends and is able to throw parties every weekend, but really is stuck-up and only trying to maintain alpha dominance of the her position.
Did you watch Twilight Time?
Why did you make me google that last word?
IKR? I doubt she’ll even be punished this time around. Oh, and she claims she gets bullied. I hope that was true at one point, or she’s grounded until Menarche
If I’m exaggerating our understanding of him in one direction, I’d say your account is the extreme in the opposite sense. The poor guy didn’t name himself, and being a highly successful businessman is no crime. His family has had a longstanding relationship with Ponyville, even having helped with its founding. His portrayal in FAD was definitely a positive one, unlike this.
You might be over thinking this just a bit. For starters, the dude’s name is Filthy Rich. I’m pretty sure they never intended him to be a paragon of generosity and ethical business. For all we know, the only reason he punished DT at the end of Family Appreciation Day is because she insulted his business associate and could have cost him some money.
Second, he’s had exactly one speaking minor speaking role over the course of 5 seasons. He doesn’t exactly have all that much of a personality to begin with, so no one can say if IDW’s staying true to it or not because it’s practically not there at all to begin with. It’s like saying they got Pound Cake’s personality all wrong.
Looks like IDW’s amok run is still in stride.
Someone knows the classics.
Yeah… See the higher-res version for my comment
@Ardashir
She’ll probably be grounded for a really long time. Like until Menarche.
We’ve actually never established them as popular, in fact, I’d believe the rest of the school loathes them but perhaps not to the degree the CMC does based on “Ponyville Confidential” when DT was announced as the newspaper editor.
This is exactly what I’m talking about. They’ve drifted back toward using extremely typical cliches with him.
@Masem
Some kind of redeeming moment at the end would be nice, but still. This fruit ain’t fresh, confound it. Reminds me of the stuff they pulled in SA/Cadence’s comic. It was a high-school trope overload, far worse than EqG.
If you’re talking about the fans, I wouldn’t go with “like”. I’d go more with “use her for something other than a generic bully”.
Though I wonder about all the people who seem to find her more evil than Sombra and Chrysalis combined.
It’s not the worst thing they did to his character:
because this is beautiful
do you not see the beauty
it’s like watching a master artist at work, effortlessly swinging their brush to create something amazing
oh diamond i will never tire of watching your evil little mind at work
Also, I just in general tend to like bratty, arrogant characters, whcih Diamond obviously fits. In her case in specific, though, I started liking her circa Ponyville Confidential, when we saw how she acted when she put her mind to something other than tormenting the CMC - which, yes, still ended up happening, but with something of a reason what with them trying to pull the most popular article for reasons she didn’t comprehend. And she was actually pretty damn good at it up ‘til that point, too. A wonderful bit of added character depth that sparked an interest in the character which I would hold up both past and future actions to in comparison, seeing them in the light of said additional depth to see what that did to how I viewed them, as well as other bits of new depth scattered around here and there (though we haven’t gotten anything quite so substantial since). It’s a fun little exercise, using what little we get beyond ‘bully’ to try and peer beyond the wall of bully we’re usually left with.
Also she’s, like, adorable. Lookit that face. D’aww.
