I agree that they are more convenient than the grid but they are not economically efficient or feasible without subsidy compared to other power sources.

Actually no, not really. Solar panels are more convenient than grid electricity.  
It’s just the initial cost that can be cumbersome.
 
But that’s not the definition of “energy efficiency”, anyway.

Is it not energy efficient in terms of economic energy because without government subsidy it costs more than all of the electricity it will generate.

Here we have the first element in period 5. No atomic clocks here - which is OK since caesium can substitute - but solar cells are moving towards the organic realm with conjugated hydrocarbons replacing the old metal alloys.
 
(The element’s also used for purple fireworks. Remember the flame test?)
