Can’t say I’m surprised; I’ve read the same thing about the first Friends Forever issue, and having seen how good Carla “Speed” McNeil is in other comics, I find it very easy to believe about that issue.
And I did read some complaints about the Twilight micro being too cliched and reading too much like a kiddie comic.
The hate was mostly due to the art style.
I’ve seen some of the original inks for this issue and it’s clear that the colorist made it worse in some places by re-doing the lines. Celestia’s face in particular was much better in the ink stage.
Personally, I thought the writing was OK; as cliched as the story was, I thought it was developed nicely, and the characterizations seemed fine to me. The art, though, was below average – not horrible, except arguably for a couple of small places, but definitely lacking in terms of composition and story structure.
