Well, it depends. If the author intended certain races to be better or more noble than others, as with Tolkien’s Men and Orcs, then you’re just going along with the setting. If the source material shows the races to be on a largely even footing, as with the various pony tribes, then you’re still racist.
I think. There aren’t exactly hard and fast rules for this kind of thing. And as Avenue Q taught us, everyone’s a little bit racist.
