Maybe these Dragon Town stock ancestors have coexisted with Ponies in the Far East.  
We know that dragons along with some farm animals such as donkeys and cows are somewhat sapient.  
I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Chinese” nobility keeps dragons as servants/pets.
 
Don’t forget the “Aztec” ponies from Daring Don’t. That destroyed my previous headcanon that Native Americans aren’t ponies.

The show has associated buffaloes with Native Americans, and the Equestria map shows the Griffon homeland across the sea to the East of Equestria, making me think they could be equating Griffons with Europeans. So for a while I wondered if dragons were the equivalent of East Asians, with their homeland to the West of the map. The feral lifestyle dragons seemed to be living in “Dragon Quest”, plus the East Asian themed pony in “Magic Duel” made me give up that idea. But all of the sudden the comic really is trying to associate dragons with East Asian culture.

Seeing as how “French” are depicted in the show as a Pony(Haute Cuisine from Ponyville) and Gustave le Grande a griffon. “Hispanics” being portrayed as both Ponies and mule in the show. “Meso-Americans” as buffoloes and ponies(Daring Don’t). And this guy from Magic Duel.

… and I tend to overthink my replies. I started writing before all those other replies above mine were posted. I think I agree with them except I place the size of the dragon on the size of their hoard instead of an emotion like greed.
