well, we do have a formal “you” article, for starters.
After being bombarded with Norteño and banda music all my life, I’ve never been able to grow to like it. Gimme mariachi any day.
My family has a rich tradition in mariachi singers, but it has been eroding eroding due our common enemy: Norteño and Banda Conjuntos
here in venezuela, i’ve seen them hired for “mid-class” parties (where the people hiring them has lots of money but arent hoity toity about it) and being treated pretty danm well. after performance they are given food and are invited to stay in the party.
as for the high arts, nothing beyond concerts, and thats just for the singers whit the AMAZING voices.
I’ve personally never seen Mariachis act as mere street performers. Usually they’re hired for parties, and like any live music acts are fairly expensive when you have the alternative of just using a sound system instead. Then again, it may be different in the rest of Mexico. I’ve just lived on the northern part, which is sadly lacking, culturally speaking.
Well, yes, I’m aware of that. I was more asking if there was any appreciation of the Mariachi’s as part of the “high” arts that I haven’t heard of. The Mariachi’s in other Latin American countries are, invariably, guys with spare instruments looking for a quick buck, but I met a few amazing musicians that were Mariachis in my travels through Mexico, so I was wondering if people had stopped doing exactly what you just described.
Oh, they’re musicians hired for events. Even if the event IS high class (which can often be the case), the musicians are usually still treated like servants or decoration, and more picturesque than haute couture. So the Mariachi outfit is not gonna be considered the hallmark of high class.
Are… there any mariachi’s which are considered high class? Because from my trips and anecdotal observations from others, Mariachi’s have more in common with street performers than classical musicians in the mind of people. Which is bullshit, but not the place.
hahaha good observation, the mariachi outfits all fancy as all hell.
Heheh! That’s why I thought it would be funny. Right there with the ‘classy outfit’. Sure, mariachi players look awesome, but they’re probably not the first ones to be accused of being high class. Fiddlesticks is being adorably clueless.
